Default Need Advise!!!

I was planning on installing headers and an off-road y pipe, and was wondering if I could get away without tuning it till next summer. The only reason I even wan't to install headers is because my cats are out. Would it just be best to buy a y pipe with cats and forget about the headers for the time being. I found a cat y pipe on texas speed in the mid three's$. Would this be a direct bolt on for stock headers or can it only be used with after mkt. headers. Thanks for any advise.

if your cats are out take your car to the dealership and get new ones.

I didn't think that he really wanted to run cats...

Anyway...
You don't really need tuning with an off-road pipe and a set of long tubes.. or one with cats for that matter. I got by just fine with full exhaust and a cam with a few bolt-ons without tuning for about 6 months. I wouldnt think that it would be an issue for you really at all.

you can get by with out the tune, however, you will see improved performance with a tune. sounds like you have a tight budget to work with. I would hold off on the tune for a while.

I would suggest at the time you install headers, that you replace your front o2's with Bosche 13111's and a set of o2 sim's for the rears.

That would be great, but I'm still debating on the headers. If you find them though, let me know!

When installing headers, you don't NEED a tune, it'll run without it, the main purpose of a tune is simply to get the best performance out of whatever part you installed, or to eliminate any SES lights, with new O2s and a pair of sims you won't have the SES light.
BTW the catted y pipes are usually for headers, tho there are places that have them for stock exhausts

did I mention that the dealership would give you new cats for FREE? other than that, what everybody else said is true. if you get a catted y-pipe or an ORY with O2 sims, you'll be fine.

Contrary to what everyone says, the install of my headers, ory, and catback actually improved my a/f ratio. It was very rich from the factory, and it leaned it out a few points after the exhaust, still running less than optimum a/f though.

I wouldn't waste my money on the sims when the tune will turn off the code for that when you get it. Plus if you remove your AIR and go with non emissions headers, then you will still get a light from that code, so the money spent on the sims to keep from seeing the light would be a waste.

Even if I don't have a warranty on the car, it's a 2001, and I'm the second owner.

Emission warranty is 80k, or 8yrs, regardless of the number of owners (BTW that's a federal law and if the dealership gripes then tell em you'll be calling the local EPA office)
