Question Will I have to flycut?

Hey guys/girls, will I have to flycut my pistons with these cam specs and this head grind? The car is a 2000 SS.

Comp Cams custom grind specs are: 230/234 114+4

Heads are as follows: AFR 205 59cc heads with .660 lift dual springs and ti-retainers

Any help would be much appreciated.

No... Flycutting is not necessary with that size cam.

With the 59 cc heads it's hard to say one way or another for sure. If you do decide to go with these just make sure the PV clearance is checked.

What are you basing that on? You don't even know what lift the cam is, how much out of the hole the pistons are, or gasket thickness...

To get AFR205s down to 59cc they need to be milled .040 - .042, needless to say that is a lot. What are the lobe profiles???

LIKE lift matters.
Its all in duration in LSA when your looking for a cam that wont need flycuting.
I assume this is a stock stockblock or else valve relives would be there so assume the piston is -.005/-.007 like most typical stock shortblocks.
I believe it will be close as you have had those heads milled quite a bit and your running a decent sized cam.
I would check it before you fire your motor back up or sell the heads and buy some ETP 215 heads on a 59cc so that P/V is never a issue.

I didn't even realize that the heads had been milled. He made no mention of that. BUT I should have known, and do, that AFR's require milling to get the cc down that much. Sorry for that, my mistake. In that case, you may want to think about buying a .045 gasket to increase your chances. haha. I am 99.9% sure that it would work if you had them milled to 61cc (which is ~ 11:1 compression). But, the 59cc is pushing it even with the gasket.

So... as everyone else has said, just check the p/v clearance once you get the heads on and cam in. The best way to do it is to use clay and put a little on the top of each piston. When you turn the cam, it will make a "mark" in it. That's about the safest way to do it.

As JZ'sTA has just stated, lift does not matter when you are talking about having to flycut.

Simply put, AFR does not equal a stock head in any way shape or form.

The different valve size, seat placement, chamber size etc will all affect P to V clearance.

Yea the heads are milled .042, sorry I did not mention this but I guess it though it was a given that they were milled being that they are 59cc. I will try the clay test or maybe give Tony @ AFR a call. Thanks for the input.

I will test! No point in throwing all that $ into the car and then messing something up that a little testing could have not figured out or 3 hours of flycutting =P
