Default OPINIONS: Best A4 cam for 10's/Highway

Hey everyone. Hope your Christmas went well and hopefully Santa supported the cause. I'm writing just to get some opinions. I have a '99 Z28, full bolt-ons, stalled, with significant weight reduction. I know people have nailed some 10's all-motor, cam-only and that is what I'm shooting for. Even if I hit like a 10.99, I'd be happy. However, I don't want my car to be a track-only monster, I also want it to be pretty nasty on the highway and just have some killer top end. I'm having trouble deciding on a cam. Right now I have a G5X2 on a 112, and I'm wondering if this is the best choice. I was also thinking of something custom, similar to the G5X4, or maybe even the HPE 'S' cam. What would you do?

More weight loss and a huge stall. 4400 or so. That is all.

I perfer the X3 on a 114 if your looking for a nasty pulling highway monster. the X3 pull a bit harder at the top end.
Honestly, with the right converter and a good race weight, all the cams above have the possibility of geting your car down the 1320 in under 11 sec.

What do you suggest for weight reduction?

Basicaly get the weight to about 2850.
There is (or used to be) sticky and multiple threads in drag racing section.

Well, I'm keeping the carpeting, and most of the interior, so I guess 2850 is out of the question. I guess I'll have to either strip out something else or expect low 11's. Haha.

My buddy has that cam, and we're going to throw it in with a 4400 stall soon, so we will see what his car does. However, I want to do something a little different. His car is going more towards an all out race car,...I'm going to try and keep mine street.

Convertor will make a bigger difference than the cam. If your going for max effort N/A pick the biggest convertor that you can stand. I had a PT4400 convertor and it wasn't bad at all. If I go back to an N/A setup I'm gonna run a 4600-4800 stall.

i think if you get your raceweight to around 3,300 or less, with a big converter, and a 4.10 gear, you should get really close with your current X2 cam.

I think I'm pretty damn close on weight. I've taken out all the heat shielding and splash guards, air dams, front bumper reinforcement, windshield washer fluid reservoir, front sway bar, AIR/EGR, radio/amp/speakers, interior panels, cats, spare/jack, rear seat (passenger will come out at the track), and I also have an aftermarket converter that's about 20 lbs lighter, lighter springs and shocks up front, and I will almost definitely be pulling my A/C. I have a 3800 stall now and I'll see where that gets me, and I may think about 4:10's, but I'm worried about the highway then.

Talking

I was always told 4.10's on a A4 would be too much.

I was thinking that 4.10's would be too much on an automatic, but people have been pushing me towards them. It's not so much the top speed that'd bother me, it's more the cruising RPM that would worry me. I'm thinking in a 4-speed auto, 4.10's may suck on the highway and be too track-oriented.

Im not sure what gear ratio you have in your car now, but people in Auto vettes with the stock 2:73 gears then switching to 3:73s and a 3200 T/C have taken off more then a second in 1/4 mile times. The 4:10s in your auto would be overkill IMHO and your going to be reving the engine really high and since you have exhaust that will get old quick. best of luck

I agree, that is too high a gear ratio for an A4.
