Default HP tuners cable issues??

is it just me or has anyone else had issues with the cable causing a power surge? ive already gone through 2 laptops. It all started when I was logging one day and saw an error on my laptop saying that the was a surge of power while i was logging. Anyone else have a similar occurance?

I got my serial port fried but I think it has little to do with
the cable, and everything to do with the power inverter I
was running the laptop off of and the unvervoltage situation
on the truck. Underdrive pulley made it run about 10.5V at
idle, which is the cutout voltage for the inverter, and when
the IGN bounced the inverter kicked in & out and after several
of these, serial no worky.

Ground loop bad.

My cable was fine, the laptop got hurt, I bought a USB serial
dongle at Wal-Mart and have been using that (more "expendable").
