Temperature in headers VS crossover pipe
I was talking with a local company that does powder coating and ceramic coating about getting my shorty headers and crossover pipe coated.I wanted to do powder coating cause its cheaper and im not looking for it too be all pretty and perfect.Anyways,he said he HAS to do ceramic on the headers due to the heat but he can probably do powder coating on the crossover pipe becuase the heat isnt as intense.Apparently powder coating is only good to 600-700 degrees.So my question is, is it ok to get the crossover pipe powder coated or will it get too hot???Thanks Nick

see if you can pm n20 dave on this board he does ceramic and powder coating I talked to him yesterday about almost the same questions on my kit he can help you out

Sorry i was generalizing too much,that was degrees F.Id really hate to get the crossover ceramic becuase of its size,thats gonna be pricey,maybe i should look into an alternative for that part,since the headers are mainly whats prone to cracking.
Dr.X what did he say to you in that regard?im gonna shoot him a pm anywho.

best just leave the headers like they are, and get the x-over coated.
another option is to shoot the xover with high temp paint and wrap it with exhaust rap to hold the heat in, a bit cheaper.

Thats very true.I "Hope" my headers arent going to crack....Theyre JBA shortys,plus i have a set of 01 stockers i could always bolt on if they do end up cracking.My main reason for the coating wasnt for looks but mainly to prevent cracks as well as keep the underhood temps down.Main concern is underhood temps.

We have several powder coatings that are designed for high heat applications, one in particular that's good up to 1000 degrees. generally a standard powder coating will be good to around 450-500 degrees sustained without failure but the crossover will see more than that. I would not powder coat headers ever. If anything I could do the crossover in the high temp black. That would hold up just fine.

The local shop wanted $200 just for the shorty headers So as you could imagine i wasnt too thrilled seeing as how the crossover is even bigger than the headers.Now i cant decide what makes more sense;get the headers coated and just wrap the crossover or get the crossover coated and not the headers etc....if anyone wants to post how they like their coating or what they have etc id appreciate it.

have you got the cross over quoted yet? genarlly it is cheaper to have the crossover coated because its a simplier design, while the headers have all these tubes welded together.
id run the headers uncoated for a season and see if they crack or not. if they dont you could get them coated.

as dave had said he's not a sponsor yet so I won't go into to much detail but for my tubing to be coated and bead blasted on other parts as well as coating the turbo housing it wasn't a whole lot more than your header price and trust me the work I saw at the shop was phoneminal
