IS THIS BAD???? [Pictures Inside!!] Need Advice!
Hi all,
I'm looking for your advice on the condition of this 10bolt diff. I'm looking to purchase this 02 black ws6 and got to test drive / inspect her last night. I found what looks like seeping fluid from the diff. cover but it was not really wet, it just LOOKS wet. I posted many pictures and all the info in my thread.
I know some people reading in the Gears & Axles forum might be better suited to answer this question than just the ones in the New Members area.

Na, it looks normal; probably little seepage around the gasket
maybe some from the vent.
Have the seller remove the fill plug and let you stick your finger in there, and make sure there is oil on your finger tip.
Are their any leaks from the front seal? Any strange noises?

are you saying it is showing more wear than it should for 30k miles?
is a differential replacement something that typically occurs at, say, 75,000 miles with moderate fast driving.

As stated by Carter its probably the pinion seal.
I am correcting the original post to reflect.

i went back to see the car tonight to check the pinion seal
--> I found some nice black sludge all over the passenger side of the rear diff on the car, and on the axle on the that side. the drivers side was much cleaner.
This is gear oil, right? the oil was only on the car behind the u-joint. the pinion seal, correct?
--> I opened the fill plug and fluid was dripping out immeadiately, plenty full. i included a photo of the fluid so you could see if it is clean. looks good as far as i know.
Is this the bad news i was fearing? its been well lubed yet pinion seal appears to be leaking! how badly?
