Default Need help identifying 918's (as in blue stripe or not?)

I recently bought a TR224 and 918/ti retainer spring package from a board member and were told they were blue stripe 918's. Fine and dandy till they arrive and there is not one single trace of blue on ANY of the springs. After some communication back and forth the best info we have to go on is these springs were a Thunder Racing warranty replacement for original 918's that broke ( purchased April 03 ) in yet another board members car. Sounds great and all but there is no blue stripe and these were reportedly installed in June or july of 03. Apparently only 5k miles on them and I must admit they look like brand new. Only thing I'm worried about is if these were in the "bad run" of the break happy 918's... Anyone have input on whether or not I need my head examined for installing these or are they okay? Does the blue stripe come off after some use?

I searched like mad and there is just sooooooo many posts about these springs I hope that those of you who know the scoop will chime in. Thanks.

The bad batch was a long time ago. After that Comp started putting the blue stripe on them to Identify the good ones. Unless someone had a set of the early ones laying around your probably OK.Anyone that knows for sure, please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that bad batch more than three years ago.

What about the blue stripe? I looked soooo carefully and couldn't see any trace of it. Did all the "new" versions have the blue stripe?

I would find out if the old ones didn't have any stripe. The paint will stay on forever, so if there is no blue stripe I would be very suspicious that these may be the originals.

the ones I took out had about 10k miles on them. They are the blue stripes but the stripe has faded to an oily green color.

Hmm yeah I hear you guys and really appreciate your input. I have had great luck with other purchases/sales off this forum and I did inquire about the blue stripe prior to sending out payment. Sadly there is absolutely NO STRIPE at all blue or otherwise on these springs and although I sure wanted to run them I am not willing to risk my engine for a couple hundred bucks. They are def oval wire and sure look like 918's from all the pics I have seen but it sure looks like these are older not so good ones. What a drag.

What do you mean? Ask them if they sold good springs that were non blue stripe or what?

You said that they were replacement springs for some 918 failure. So talke to a Senior staff member that can recall what brand of springs they used to replace.
The "Old" 918s were GREEN striped BTW.
There are other companies besides Comp that make "Beehive " springs, Lunati is one of them.

In the back nad forth communication with the seller he claims that these are the updated 918's.... now that I see there were stripes of some kind on the original bad versions too I am starting to doubt these are even Comp Springs. Which may or may not be bad depending on what others there are available that are good. Lunati sure has a good name in sbc/bbc land. How the heck would I ever identify them? Only thing I can think of is check spring rates and compare.

PSI also makes two beehive springs and there is also the Comp 915. Not sure on the Comp, but the PSI's do not have any markings on them. Can you post a photo?

The guy I bought these from stepped up to a TREX cam and patriot springs so he sent the springs to me in the Patriot box. I will post up a pic of one when I get back from the shop today.

I ran blue stripe 918s for 25,000 miles and the stripe was COMPLETELY gone when I uninstalled them. Food for thought.
