Default how do you get the Power steering pulley off the PS pump??

I need to replace the pulley as it cracked off (complely gone except for the pulley insert).
well i thought it would be as simple as putting a hex in the center then putting a vise on whats left of the pulley.
it cranking on it with a large braker bar but the thing isnt moving.
what do i do to get the pulley off?

Local auto parts stores carry a tool which is called a " pulley removal and installation tool for pressfit applications" this can be purchased for around 35 or rented. It has 2 pieces of steel shaped like a C that attach around the lip on the steel center section, and uses a combination of threaded adapters and a nut. Then you use a wrench to to turn adapter and pulls pulley off. Hit the shaft with some penetrating lube before you go to the autoparts store and by the time you get back you should be all set to go!

Rent a puller from autozone ($40) and use it to pull what's left of the pulley off. It's press fitted on. Don't let the tool give you a false sense of confidence though, it's still a huge pain in the *** to get it off with the tool.

Every GM car that I can think of has a pressed on P/S pump pulley. Every Ford and Chrysler for that matter also. I have done countless pulley swaps. It's very easy if you have the tool and a little PB blaster to help lube things up. If you have an impact it takes just a minute to do.

72-73 was last years for keyway pulley with nut. I believe everything after that was press fit.

There was a thread on this subject a while back...there was a question of whether or not this setup from Summit would work without modification (removing the smaller dia. threaded area)...can anyone verify if this tool will/will not work without modification?:

It will work if you cut off the smaller diameter threaded piece. Just don't use it with it still on or you will probably pull the threads on the PS pump (ask me how I know).

I had to replace mine also. I just took it to a GM dealer where I bought the replacement. The replacement pulleys may or may not come with a hole in them to access the PS mounting bolts. Unless it has one or you drill one you won't be able to get the pump on if you put the pulley on first.

In most cases with the fbody pulley it is easier to remove just the center section because the plastic from the pulley body concaves forward. What happens is most tools that you rent dont have that much concave on the steel c clips so you cant get the c clips seated well enough to put good load on the part for removal. With no pulley body you should easily be able to seat the c clip from the puller into the lip on the center section. Dont forget the penetrating lube.
