99% of the guys with "duals" or x pipes have this setup. its probly the most popular non-catback setup out there.

Im talking about dumps right after the headers...no x pipe or really any piping at all just a muffler and downpipe. Thanks!

You're HP gain from the setup will decrease if you run the exhaust like that.

if you have a well made exhaust, with a crossover(Xpipe or H pipe), it should be helping to scavenge from the opposite side... remember, exhaust isnt a constant flow, its a series of pulses.

also, when the hot hot gas comes directly out of the header, its expanded... if you let it cool off just slightly with a longer pipe, the volume of it decreases..
so right off the header (im just making numbers up here) you're trying to shove 500cfm thru a muffler, but 3ft back, you're only trying to shove 350cfm thru. mufflers are a restriction. no matter how "free flowing" they are. so you'll see more loss with it on the header, then with it farther back.
PLUS, your muffler packing wont last very long being that close to the engine.

NO! NO! NO! WRONG WRONG WRONG!!! engines dont like backpressure at all.
sometimes people confuse velocity or acoustic tuning with "creating backpressure" but they're just confused.. engines hate backpressure. period. all it does is induce pumping losses.
some people see things like engines making more power with smaller header primary tubes and they THINK its because of backpressure... when in reality, theres no backpressure increase, the engine just likes more exhaust gas velocity.. or some other effect..
even in cases of severe overlap where you would think backpressure would stop the intake charge from coming out, that's not what you want... what you want is to tune it so the "pulse echo" coming back up the tube keeps the charge in the chamber.. similar to intake runner length tuning... NO piston engine likes backpressure.. period.

I had TD flowmaster 40 series and they were dumped ar about the doors. Was evil at idle, but just to obnoxious at cruise for an on/off daily driver.

I say if you do it, turn them out a little like sux2bu has, that way we can get some revenge on the ******* harley's with their exhaust blowing my mirrors off.

I see tons of drag cars with this setup.

If you daily drive this setup however, i PROMISE it will get old though. You will definatly get harassed by the police and your neighbors as well lol.

I daily drive my car 90+ miles a day. i do still have a stock cam, but it has a nice deep rumble at idle and sounds mean as HELL driving around. with the th350 and 4.10 gears it is definatly only for the HARDCORE guys on the highway.
BTW the Popo never even look twice at me. It only gets CRAZY loud when i smash on the "loud" pedal. Thats the only thing that kinda sux right now. Cause of the stock cam i think it is TOO quiet at idle. but i'm hoping a T rex will change that.
