I believe it helps straighten out airflow across the sensor in the MAF, & also to keep anything out of the engine that the filter might miss.

I removed the screen in my car cant really say that there was an improvment but when trying to move as much air as possible every little thing helps.

its to keep stuff from hitting the tiny wires. also if you take them out a lot of the time it richens the car and actualy slows you down...

Guys who spray dry shots have to take the screen out. I run a screen. There is no gain from removing it. Just keep it in there unless you spray a dry shot.

like said above it straightens the airflow out so your maf can get a proper reading, if you remove it, the air will whirlwind around the pipe a little more and you wont get an accurate reading

The lead tech at the local chevy place that is a big camaro enthusiast said the same thing. More air is not good if its turbulent air that is more difficult to get an accurate reading. He said the maf straightens the air flow as others have said.

Just leave it alone. You can experience negative reactions by removing it. The first thing I did when I got my SS home was remove the screen; a week later I notice high inconsistant idle, cruise control effect, and about 17-18 mpg. Put the screen back in 2 weeks ago (don't ask me why I rode around with it out; 'cause I don't know!), idle has gotten better, no cruise control effect, and mileage...... up to 20mpg and gets better every tank!

I removed the screen when I did the FRA mod and haven't had any issues, the T/A runs very well as you can see by my times in my sig. The FRA mod works too, my times are consistent regrdless of the temperature outside.

i wouldnt remove the screen. there have been two times on my buddies car that we have taken the lid off to find crud laying in the MAF screen. and no, he doesnt run open/no filter, so we have no clue how that stuff made it by the filter, but it did, twice.

I don't have any ill efects that I can see. Though I am still amazed at the gas consumption because I used to drive a prelude

Where can I get a new one.....with a screen. I figure they are 2 arms and 2 legs at the dealership.

Pop the screen out. The C5 ZO6's don't have them, and I'm sure the C6 doesn't have one as well.
You also will not see any larger MAF units like the 85mm ones with screens in them.

Peace,
Craig.
