Default Looking at getting into an SS camaro; question about oil consumption.

Im looking at a cammed out SS with headers and full exhaust. The question i have is: I know oil consumption is normal on Ls1's but it seems that right at about the time to change the oil on this car the change oil light comes on for a few days and then a low oil light comes on.

Is this something i need to worry about? Youll have to excuse my pretty Newbie question but im a newbie to ls1 engines; im comming over from the Twin Turbo V6 world.

Thanks guys

Older LS1s had higher oil consumption due to a
cylinder 1 overbore, looser pistons. Also the PCV
system's design makes them prone to slurp up
oil given any blowby at all. Pull the #1 and #3
plugs and compare them on an oil-crust basis to
see whether this car has the overbore problem,
which GM finally admitted & fixed somewhere in
'01 production I believe. Otherwise look at the TB
for a "snail track" of oil spooge leaving from the
PCV makeup air port which would indicate a lot
of time spent in high-blowby operation (if cam &
headers weren't a clear enough signal of intent).

My '02 uses negligible oil from change to change.
But I have few opportunities for sustained WOT
and haven't worn it in enough for blowby yet.

I'd insist on a compression, maybe leakdown check
before I dollared down on any high value performance
car. High value in my book being anything over maybe
$2K. Good luck checking that #8....

Cool thanks

The car is a 2000 SS. Its a friends car that im buying and i know he didnt rag on it; on the contrary 2 years ago before the though to buy his car even crossed my mind i would always try to get him to go to the track me but he never went. I always asked why he cammed his car or modded it at all if he wastn going to drive it hard ever. So i know the car has been driven fairly conservativly.

It seems to be about a quart low every oil change. Do you think this is a big deal/

If you mean 1 quart every 3K miles, that’s not bad at all compared to my ’00 WS6. It used about 1 quart every 1K miles, it also had various mods including cam, headers, and a 3500 stall.

Now my ’98 LS1 is a different story. It uses no oil at all. It has an internally stock motor though.

I’m not sure if it’s a safe bet to assume that an ’02 will use any less oil than the older years. I’ve known a couple ‘02s that have used quite a bit of oil, while my ’98 uses nothing.....

I just changed my oil today and I'd say it was probably almost a full quart low. My car is a 98 with 86k miles on it and I changed the oil after 4,000 miles.

I think oil consumption issues are all in the luck of the draw...

That is fairly normal oil consumtion. I use 1 qt every oil change at 130k, I have since I owned the car (80k).

I would want the low oil light checked out. That could be trouble.

Good Luck!!

vital Velocity That is Normal.. ALL newer GM cars have a CHeck oil LIke come on every 3k Miles its more or less a safty feture. Not much to worry. as for the Low oil lite. could be due to oil consumption from the came and other mods. see if the car has had a TUNE. Might help on that

i bought a 2000 z-28. drove it from oklahoma city to new york in 2 days, say 1350 miles. when i got home i consumed over a quart of oil in 2 days.the next day the check engine light comes on and my left cat is bad and o2 sensors.the following month my right cat goes bad. car only had 21000 miles on it.i had talked to a reputable shop and the tach said that model year 2000 had shitty rings. so my GUESS is that with the oil consumtion it screwed up(clogged) my cats.
