There are several different brands of gears you can get. I went with Motive (not supposed to whine), installed them myself and have some whine out of them. As for beefing up, I think some people get an aftermarket cover that is supposed to help.

I put 4.10's in my stock 10-bolt. I love them, but if you're leary you can get something smaller. I like the suggestion about the strong rear end cover...

Default Leave it!

The worst mod I ever did! Ruined my nice quiet Rear.
Could not stand driving it. It blew in about 1500 miles. $500 GONE
I picked up a used rear with 3.42 in it for $300 Locally to hold of the expense for the 9 Bolt.

is it true that its gonna last longer in an automatic since the converter takes most of the torture, and in the M6 you can tear it up faster since its a manual. thats just what ive heard and wanted to know if its true since i am gonna be doing the same thing, since the 12 bolts are expensive this is a good alternative until i can afford one. and i also heard that the strange or motive gears are the best and dont whine as much as the richmond gears and other brands.

Man, doesn't sound like the gears wre installed properly. Sorry to hear it. My 4.10's are quiet as a mouse, even though the stock spacers would fit back in, and we have to use "an assortment" of spacers. But if you set it up right, it's quiet, no matter which gears or which ratio...

Yeah auto's are easier on the gears, especially on launching

hey FUN LS1 did u feel a big difference from stock gears to 4.10's.
should i purchase the gears straight from motive or do u recommend a place to buy them from? i look at it this way i can't get any weaker then the stock rear end so like i said for now until i can afford a ford 9" rear from driveline solutions gears will go in the stock rear end

You guys should not get whine, if you rearends are whining after a gear install you installed them way to tight. I've installed a few sets in 10 bolt rears 8.5 and 7.6 and never had gear whine. I paid somebody to install my first set and they did whine, pulled them out and fixed it, side shims were way off not to mention wrong pinion shim. Setting up gears is a science, and if done right should not whine (any brand).

3.73 Motive Gears and a T/A Performance Diff Girdle (with Thunder Racing logo)

Both were purchased from Thunder Racing.

My gears don't whine either.

I've made lots of dragstrip passes with my Motives, and they're still quiet.
