Default smoothing

Can someone school me on smoothing. I see it at the top of the dyno graphs ranging between 0-5. I've played around w/ it using the win pep files. Besides smoothing out the curve does it really affect anything else. I've seen some posts where people were comparing hp numbers, and as soon as someone pointed out the smothing level wasn't five they acted like it wasn't a true comparison. Which is more acurate, less or more smoothing?

The more we smooth the more realistic the HP/TQ numbers are. The less we smooth the more ripple, transient peaks and valleys in the graphs that are usually caused by drivetrain imbalances etc. However, many operators succumb to consumer pressure and do whatever to give the highest readings. If you look at many dyno graphs you will often see alot of ripple where the dyno graph clips a transient peak, ignoring the valleys and reports it as real HP and TQ. This is one of many variables and reasons why some dynos will read higher then others.

SO going from Macs which dyno at 419 hp and 405 tq with smoothing on 3 to Edelbrock headers at 424.33/409.75 smoothing at 4 , the gains are a little better then shown.

Yes, I would agree with that. For comparison pulls, should stay with same smoothing factor.
