Is it possible to remove the a/c all together on my ta. Will it help me gain a few hp and if it can be done what do i have to do to make it work?

Just take off the A/c belt.

It really will not increase your horesepower but if you remove all the A/C components you can save some weight

so thats all the smaller second belt does is power the ac? is it hard to remove all the stuff? what all needs to be taken off?

im looking to do this as well, i have a convt, so not too much need for the a/c haha...however i did hear that it does free up a little hp cuz its not driving the other belt anymore

Yes the smaller belt is for the A/C compressor.

You can just start ripping and tearing everything connected to the system. Lines from compressor to condensor, remove condensor, remove lines from condensor to evaporator (on firewal), remove line from evap back to compressor (this run includes the big aluminum accumulator).

If you want to get really creative, you can remove the evap coil from inside the dash as well. If you can live without the heater, you can remove that entire big black plenum, the heater core, fan motor, hoses, etc. Somebody has a blockoff plate that rivets from the inside of the car and plugs the hole.

It makes changing the #8 plug a snap too

It frees up almost no hp due to the compressor having a clutch on the front.

This mod makes for a much cleaner engine bay, easier access for working, and a great weight reduction, which is off the front of the car no less

It is not lightweight. I would have to say around 25 pounds. all parts and everything.

that hardline that is right there on the radiator. I broke it once because it moved too much to the left. so i found that i was being more careful when A/C was installed. 35$ part. So I would just take it off. So you can do a cam swap without having to recharge the A/C when you are done? That would be pretty cool. I just like having my space. probably for a spring change as well.

Good Stuff guys thanks, sucks it doesnt give any hp though the car doesnt get driven in the winter so i really dont need heat...cold nights might be a prob though.

Sorry to dig up this old thread - but quick question...

Is there a need to do something to block the shroud off on the sides after removing the condenser ?

Thinking about pulling out the A/C soon since I can't use it in hot weather without overheating anyway.

I took a brief look at the mounting for the a/c on 1999 z28 . I can see a front bolt . There evidently is more than one bolt holding this thing on.

Can someone please list some simple instructions on proper removal of the compressor.

Do you have to drop the stabilizer bar ?
Exactly how many bolts are holding this thing to the block or bracket?

I cant get the car high enough in the air or on lift to see any better. Is it possible to remove the a/c compressor without owning a scissor lift or something?

Any help would be appreciated. I am new to the Ls1tech forum.

I am fully capable of pulling a vacuum, and recharging the system etc..

I just have never seen an LS1 out of the car to see how everything is mounted. My first attempt at removal ended in a retorquing of the one bolt i could see and dropping car back off jackstand...

Someone give me a few pointers here how to remove the compressor. The belt is already off since i used the car to run in the SCCA.
