Default Tools?

So, tools right? We all have them? Some nicer than others, but we all have tools.

So post what kind you have the majority of, IE Sears, Snap on, ect.... And how ya got em.

I have thousands and thousands of dollars in ratchets, sockets, breaker bars, toque wrenches, combination wrenches, drivers, drills, saws, compressors, and may other things. I got them all from my dad, all sears tools besides a few of the power tools. some of the ratchets and sockets are 50 or 40 years old, ones that my grandpa bought back in the 50's and 60's... They are all in great shape and work like new tools.

So lets see some testimonials.

Craftsman. I usually get sears giftcards for my brithday and christmas from my dad in various amounts. About 90% of my collection was bought by those cards..

hand tools,
97% craftsman
1% husky (home depot)
1% stanley
1% chinese CRAP

as far as power tools - i love my dewalts, but the dang batteries are SOOOO expensive that i opted to buy a complete 9 piece Ryobi set with 2 new batteries for NOT MUCH MORE than it would have cost me to replace my dewalt batteries.
and replacements are 2 for $40 rather than 60+ ea. l ike the dewalts

air tools - i bought a cheap set at lowes - has lasted me just fine - but found a clearance deal on a husky set (the only air tool i know of that has a LIFETIME warranty) so i just had to pick it up.

i have been comtemplating the KOBALT tools - which i heard are made by snap-on and can be found at lowes (last time i looked) and i think i saw them on home depot's website.

that is all!

I have mostly Craftsman, but I have certain pieces from other brands. Ratchets alone I have Craftsman, Husky, Allen, Snap On, MAC, Kobalt, Proto, SK, and Facom all represented. And that is pretty much the story of my collection... a great big mix of everything mixed around a core of Craftsman.

And there's Harbor Freight stuff in there, but the kind of stuff that I wouldn't use every day.

Tools are fun. Collect 'em all!

I have 6 tool boxes (3 sets - each five feet tall) stuffed to the gills!

60% Stanley
30% Popular Mechanics
5% Sears
5% Snap-On/Mac/Huskey

If your not a profesional wrench twister, it does not make sense to me to spend a bunch on Snap-On and Mac - IMO.

The quality of the Chinese junk (no pun) everyone is harpooning here has increased in recent years and often provides a good value. I believe some of this stuff is light years ahead of Sears, but most here on this board disagree with me on this point.

I think their view is based on Chinese tools that flooded the market many years ago and were crap.

Husky, Stanley, Popular Mechanics are CHINESE which few here realize. Their fit and finish is much better than Sears. I can't say if there steel is as good as Sears but I have not broken anything that I can remember recently....

All tool manufacturors guarantee there stuff against breakage. It is pretty standard.

Those who love Sears tools will tell you they buy them so they can get replacements immediately. This is true - so - score one point for Sears.

Hey Sears tools are now sold in K-Mart. Since I live in Westchester NY and the nearest Sears is 10 miles away, that is a good thing.

Simply 'having' a bunch of big *** tool boxes does not make you either a 'mechanic' or 'smart'...

It could just mean that... You have been sold 'cheap garbage' a bunch of times.

Sears always have my vote, they are the easiest to return when you break them for those other uses..lol

I have about an even mix of tools

1/4 Snap On
1/4 Matco (bought on student discount)
1/4 Craftsman (mainly sockets)

I do have other random names also:
Knipex, Channelock, Husky, S-K, Maybach, Dewalt

In the future, I'd like to try some tools from:
Cornwell and Facom

I've had pretty good luck with stuff not breaking. I've had 2 3/32" Craftsman punches break and someone else broke one of my cheap drill bits from Northern.

I'm still debating Snap On or Matco for my new tool box.

I used to always buy Craftsman, but about a year and a half ago I started buying Snap-on and now it's basically all I'll buy. I think it is that much better.

I like Blackhawk tools made my Proto. They are good tools if you don't have a ton of cash.

Ah, Facom. Try 'em - you'll like 'em. They make my all-time favorite pliers. Everything I own of Facom just feels "right." The Ergotwist screwdrivers are great, too. If you want to try Facom on the cheap, go to www.harryepstein.com

BTW... that site is badass if you like tools!
