another fng (F#*!ING NEW GUY)
okay so i bought another t/a. the first one was a '77 and this one is a '02. one Q. why does the motor sound like a tapping noise when its cold. its kinda like a rockerarm needs adj. it stops alot when it warms up but you can still hear it very slightly. should i be worried something is ready to go or is that normal for those engines.

I really don't have to worry about starting her in the cold, but it is normal with these motors. get rid of the flowmaster it is hurting you more than helping. it is the most restrictive exhaust for our cars, stock is better. just fyi

Yea my T/A had a lifter noise on cold starts and you could hear it when it was warmed up also. Not as loud when warm. It bothered me for 20,000 miles. I had people telling me that I had the bad O ring on the oil pump. I bought the T/A new with 4 miles on it.
I switched from Mobile 1 to another synthetic oil and the lifter noise went away. I don't hear lifter noise at all anymore. I had many people listen to my motor and they alll said it sounded like a lifter. Our 04 Silverado work truck has the same noise LOL. It has the 5.3 iron block.

Yes. According to GM the noise is normal. Since the noise is normal and only occuring in cyl 1 & 8 should I get the other 6 Cyls fixed?
My wifes 03 Malibu LS sounds like crap too. Maybe they put the short skirt pistons in that too? Nope...Bad bore job durring manufacturing just like my camaro.
I already had GM send my motor out for Piston Slap and they machined it and replaced all 8 pistons and rings...Guess what....It's back and still noisy as H#ll even when it warms up. Runs like a champ but everyone asks why it sounds like a diesel.
Oh well I'll have them replace the motor this time. Tired of messing with the trips to the Stealership.
Good Luck

Well, all I can say is that I thought I had piston slap too, or as one GM tech told me, all LS1's have loud valve trains, due to the engine materials tendency to transfer sounds being much higher than that of iron..Thats just yer cam and stuff talkin to ya....
6 mos later I am told that I have a bad *quote* Oh wrist pin, thrust bearing, perhaps a rod, don't sound like a main tho*end quote*
SPEND the 85 bucks and have a pro that knows the LS1 look at it..
or you can be like me, having to purchase a rebuild or engine in the midst of moving, un employment and so on
