Default 98 Z28 for $3900 but has tranny problems, should I get it?

I found a guy selling this car for his dad. Its a 98 Z28. Manual windows and locks, white in color with t tops. 150k miles, the owner has a business a few hundred miles away that he visited frequently. Says 120k of the 150 were highway. The car is gorgeous. Asking $3900. THE BAD NEWS! I NEED ADVICE! He says a tranny syncro is bad. I call BS because he says its a dead stick in 5th and 6th, says he can push it into where gear should be but nothing happens. 1-4 work perfect. This isnt a sycro I wouldnt think but something more serious. Anyway the way the guy was acting, they dont care how much they get for the car because they are just trying to get it out of their garage. Im thinking I could prob steal it for about $3000. What would it run me to fix the problem? Is this common?

Anyway figure Ill introduce myself. My name is Dalton, Im from Lexington, KY. Currently I drive an older Chevy pickup that I have restored but the time has come to part ways with it. Im going to miss it but now Im ready to get into something quicker. Please let me know any information you all have to help me make my decison on this car.

its quiet possible a syncro or linkage. that is a steal with no tranny if the car is in good condition, you would probably need it rebuilt either way.

I'd pick it up, it would make a nice street/strip car and fun to work on/modify etc.

Well I don't think you should have any more contact with the seller. Please forward the contact information and I'll let him know you are no longer interested, but I am... oops I mean I will help find someone who will be....

I think if the motor is running smooth, I'll come from NY to get it. I would take the chance on it if I where you.

I agree with GXp, do not contact the seller anymore, PM me all his info, I will take care of this person trying to rip off a fellow LS1 Tech member myself! I'd prolly give the 3800 with the trans in the pass. seat.

Drive it even with only 1-4 you can get a good feel on how it runs etc.. even if its running bad it might have bent pushrods from a missed shift which is nothing..

Right, exactly. I'd like to find one in similar condition for a road course car. I'd like to retire the 'hawk to track and mod an LSx version for beating up on all the Porsch-ees.

Default Get It

Get it its a ls1 m6 you will love it!

If your not going to install the new/rebuilt trans yourself

I would say 3000.00 is a good ballpark with a new clutch.

but undestand its hard to find a 98 z with high miles

and a new trans that actually is new for 6,000

im sure with 150k the motor is getting tired though...

Since you restored the pickup you're driving, sounds like you know what end of a wrench is up. Take a look at rebuilding the trans yourself, add a clutch and some upgraded hydraulics, and you're looking at about 1-3k (depending on what parts you choose/need/upgrade) so you get a LS1 Z28 for pretty cheap.
Check out the sponsors for prices and go from there

Yeah, I actually saw this car listed on AutoTrader. I found it and told my friend about it and then the next day I went to search for it to show him and it was gone.

Buy it. A tranny rebuild is about $1,000 with upgrades.

sounds like a good deal to me too.
i picked up my 92 vette with a bad tranny (just over 100K on the ticker) for $4000
i paid $1800 including labor and a 3 year extended warranty for the new trans.
(A4) though!
