Fueling & Injection - Gas Gauge Not working

my gas gauge isn't working. It threw a code for the fuel sender unit. I can't remember the code off the top of my head but I'll get it later. What should I look into replacing to get it working again? I know on my truck I had to replace the whole sender unit but I'm not sure on this car. Any help would be great.
Also while I'm back there should I go ahead and upgrade my fuel pump? I know I don't need it yet but I figure it would be easier to do it now than later.

If you can afford a new pump do it while you are there. The Racetronix pump & plug n play wire harness is easy to install.

From looking around I think I have to replace the whole sender unit. List from GM is $650 (I won't be paying list)

The ceramic level sender itself can be bought as a service part from many GM parts dealers. Check to make sure it is the sender and not a bad connection first by going through the GM factory manual's diagnostic procedure.

Can you help me out with the procedures? Or tell me where to look? I have a manual but I don't know where to look since it's seperated by codes.
here is what the gauge does:
The gauge will read correctly till I get to 1/4 then it just won't work or it will not read correctly. But once I fill up the car it will read fine again. I had a code thrown and it had something to do with the sender unit but I'm not sure what the code number was or what exactly it said I just remember it was for the sender unit.
