My current setup is MAC mid-length headers and MAC ORY going into modified SLP loudmouth exhaust (modified, because I welded in an XR1 Borla muffler into the resonator) Muffler made things a lot quieter, but the sound is still a bit raspy, and annoying at 2000 rpms. I hate the fumes smell as well.

I made a decision to buy some carsound cats and have those welded into my MAC ORY.

Please, bare with me for a moment: MAC ORY is 2.5" in diameter. I figure I need to get some 2.5" cats then, right ?

I think I'll go with 94106 series cats (2.5" In/out) 94106 is a shorter version cat, which should tuck in well underneath my Camaro SS, which is lowered 1 inch.

Any comments, hints, opinions would be VERY APPRECIATED.

Carsound and Magnaflow are the same cats (I think) and I believe that everyone thinks they are fine for a performance application.

My MAC ORY is 2 1/2" in diameter and I had Random Technology 10 1/2" metal-core bullet cats welded in the Y. Result = ZERO rasp and a really nice sound ... only 2-3 HP loss, as well. the cats were about $240 each, but, well WELL worth it!

I think I have the sameones as Jeb99Ta has in my mac ory. 3 inch random metallic cats. They have been good. Y pipe is a little ugly to look at and is a little low but it works.

Weird. My Y-pipe seemed to hang a little low until the welder installed the cats. HE tucked it up really nice ... enough to where the stock cross-brace fits again without touching the Y-pipe. Mine looks as though the cats were made to fit with the contour of the body ... like it was planned that way from the factory. Mine are the same cats in your picture.

Jeb did you dyno before and after with the cats and only saw 2-3hp difference?

2-3 rwhp loss seems right from what I read....no biggie. You won't even feel the difference, and the car is gonna sound 100% better. No smelly fumes either !

I know Random Technology cats are the way to go, but I can't pay that much for cats, hence I'll go with car sound cats ($100/pair)

JUST ONE QUESTION: For 2.5" Y-pipe, should I get 2.5" in/out cats ? Or should the cats be 2.75" so they can be slipped over the Y-pipe, and then welded in ???

About any reputable shop will expand the 2 1/2" ends of the to fit over the 2 1/2" Y-pipe tubing. As for dyno'ing, it's such a minor loss that you would not be able to tell whether the weather, the transmission/engine temp, or the difference in Y-pipe made the numbers. You'd have to do a production/testing type dyno (like a Superchips tesing facility) and let the motor and drivetrain cool several hours between dyno runs with identical da/temp/humidity factors with or without SAE corrections. So, no, I did not waste my time or money with dyno'ing a pair of 10 1/1" buttet high-flow cats. It would be pointless.

If you're still planning to use the same exhaust shop I did to get the cats installed, then there should be no problem with getting 2.5" in/out cats into your 2.5" Y-pipe. That is exactly what that shop did for me, only I was using 2.5" RT cats with a 2.5" Bassani Y-pipe.

...and I just ordered Magnaflow 94106 cats (2.5" in/out) for myself off ebay.
$112 shipped for a pair !

the magnaflow and carsound are great flowing cats for their price, they flow as good if not better than the expensive ones... the new tsp catted y uses carsound cats and sells for 370$ and ive heard great things about it

Adam, just be very careful not to let the shop handle the cats rough ... like dropping them or banging them on stuff. I bought some very expensive ceramic core cats and the core was cracked in one of them. You could hear it clanking around when the car would start up or move. After a few weeks, I replaced it because it was hollow inside ... ceramic had disintegrated. Get the metal-core ones if you can. They're more expensive, but, WELL worth it.
