Gears & Axles - Tranny won't shift to 3rd at track.........help

I just bought a 99 SS, So i took it to the track to get some base numbers. I ran the car twice but both times down the track the car would not shift from 2nd to 3rd. It would hit the rev limiter before it would shift. The car is bone stock and it has 49000 miles on it. If i back off the gas and get back on it the car will shift. Do i need a new trans or what?

I had that problem with my old 700r4 before it took a dump on me...I'd think the 4L60E would do the same thing. If you just bought the car, take it to the dealer and have them drop the trans pan. When I did that on the 700r4 I found a nice amount of metal floating around. Soon after that it took a crap on me (I should have rebuilt when I had the pan down).

Im new to the LS1 game, but I would think the problem may be similar.

Experienced guys back me up or shoot me down!

A lot of people have this problem. Not so much with a bone stock car but especially when you start modifying things. I needed a hyerptech power programmer to modify the shift points or with my current modifications it wouldn't even shift into third: period!

Try resetting your ECM - sometimes this works. But the problem may return, if you plan to race it you might want to just buy a Hypertech programmer so you can reduce the RPM at which the tranny shifts.

There's more than likely nothing mechanically wrong with your transmission.

I assume you checked the fluid level; being down just a bit can cause this.

Thanks Guys for the info. Here is the deal i took it to a tranny shop and they did say the it was about half a quart low and that the rear seal was leaking (No big deal). But they said they pulled the pan and they saw some metal in the pan. I am not sure if this guy is just yanking my chain and just trying to make money off me or if their is a real problem. What do you guys think i should do. If the Trans Is going to i let them rebuild or do i buy a race preped trans.
