I'm ordering either a 12 bolt strange or a 9inch next week and i cant decide
I'm racing an01 trans am with a six speed,slicks and nitrous. Probably in the
high tens. Will the 12 be enough?Can you still use abs and traction control
with the 9inch?

A 12 bolt should be fine..Anything in the low 10's or 9's...Id look more toward the 9".

get the 9", its stronger, never have to worry, not any more money, and gear swaps are easier, and yes abs and traction control will work. MINE DOES

I heard that 9inches are better because they don't lose as much HP through them like a 12 bolt, not to mention stronger.

i've always seen 9" cheaper than a 12 bolt, saw on for 800 the other day and there is several on ebay for a few hundred dollars, do all 9" fit are they all the same? not sure, and curioius to why people buy 12 bolts over 9" if the 9" is stronger and cheaper and fits fine and works with everything.....

no not all 9" are the same you need one MADE for a 4th gen f body. the 9" is the size of gear it uses which is a ford gear size but all the basics are the same just different axle lenghts and bracets

9" rears soak up more hp than 12 bolts do. Not the otherway around. If you seen a 9" for $800 it's more than likely just the housing and maybe axles. No center section. The 9" tends to be more expensive though not a lot more than the 12 bolt depending on how you go about getting it. The reason a lot of people get 12 bolts instead of 9" rears is because the 12 bolt is a little cheaper, uses less hp, and is usually lighter than the 9" unless you buy the lightened parts which are considerably more money. For some reason most of you guys information is backwards. That being said I think if you are racing a 6spd on slicks with decent power you should get a 9". If you are running an auto get the 12 bolt.

thanks man. and no it was the whole thing, i just don't think it was one specifically made for a f-body. i thought they were all the same until now which didnt make sense so thats why i asked.

Yeah could be I guess but beings you said $800 I figured you where talking about the little deal I believe Moser had where you could get the housing and axles for $800 minus the center section.
There for a little while a few people on here where thinking it was for the whole thing.
Like I said though if you are going to be making good power through an M6 you should get a 9". Like someone said before a 12 bolt SHOULD work but I would want something that I know will work and a properly built 9" will handle pretty much anything anybody here can throw at it.

I can get you a Moser 9 inch with the Truetrac center, ABS/TCS including shipping, for $2,500.00. That is basically the same price, if not cheaper, than a Moser 12 bolt once you pay for shipping. The Moser 9 inch also uses the two oem torque arm bolts. If you order it with the $130 optional aluminum center section, the weight comes down to about the same as a Moser 12 bolt. Bob

i wish someone (sponsor needs to check in here) would actually weigh these things and post results. a dyno comparison would be nice too between the 2 most popular. (1 12 bolt set up, 1 9" set up) one of u sponsors have to have a project car u want to "test" on

I went with a 9" with a spool, gundrilled 35 splines when I bought mine.
The peace of mind was worth the extra weight, cost and hp to me.

We weighed a fully optioned Moser 12 bolt with a Truetrac posi last week, it weighed 188 pounds. We got in a Moser 9 inch with an $130 option aluminum center section, and a spool (not an even comparison...) and it weighed about six pounds less than the 12 bolt. I'm not sure how much lighter the spool is over the Truetrac, but the 9 inch wouldn't be all that much heavier when you go for the aluminum center section, which is strong enough for regular street duty. GO 9" and forget it .I have a 2000 SS my car runes 11.7 all day. I have blown apart 2x strange 12 bolts . I rebuilt it 3 times and it still whinned. The 12 bolt can handle the HP no problem the issues is the extreme weight of the cars add the 6 speed, and dead hooking on slicks. I run your same set up i launch the car on a 2-step at 5500 rpm.

I found DLS www.driveline-solutions.com/scart/agora.cgi i set it up with him and in 5 days i was painting the rear getting it ready to put in the car. Super fast I have No issues to speak of his work is great and the 9" is dead quiet still after 2 years of racing. Scott is a good egg give him a shot
