Default Rear end rebuild

Hey guys. I had some rear end problems last yer with my 2000 TA. I had it looked at by a local shop and they said i needed a "complete rebuild" of the rearend. They quoted me around 1400-1500 total. Now I know you are go to say that I should put in a 12 bolt, but I jsut dont have 2600 after shipping and labor costs.

So, i called another shop and they said 1400-1500 sounds right to have the whole rear end rebuilt. Does this souns right to you guys? Any other ideas? Could they rebuilt it with any better parts to make it stronger? I already know I would liek some 4.10's in there. Thanks in advance.

Buy a good used 10 bolt in the for sale section for $300-$400. You can sometimes find a good 12 bolt in there for around $1500-$1800. I would never get the factory one rebuilt for that kind of money. I wouldn't pay more than $300-$400 for a rebuild when I can find a good used one for that much. JMHO

I understand what you are saying, its just that I am not capable to do the work myself. So even if I do find a used 12 bolt, I still need to pay shipping, and labor to have it installed. 1400 was pretty much my maximum as I need some tires and other things to get rolling for spring. Also, I dont really like the idea of installing another USED 10 bolt that i would almost for sure have to rebuild anyways. Thanks for the information though. Maybe I will get lucky and find something local that I wont have to pay shipping charges on!

don't waste your money on the ten bolts. save the money and get a 12 bolt.

Default Dont Do It!

While I was saving for a 9 inch over the winter I found I guy local who had one for $300 and they charged me $100 to put it in.
I think you could find somebody to put one in for like $150-300 max.
If you cant find one local check here:

If you have an M6 and stay with the 10 bolt don't get 4.10s in it. It probably won't last long especially since you broke the factory setup. Also the rear end isn't very hard to install. You should list where you are from. A lot of people on here (like me) love to work on cars. And are usually willing to help for a little incentive.

I agree with all the comments...but I can't imagine you needing a complete rebuild...as in the gears, posi, bearings, etc. are all trashed?

For the sake of argument:
Take-off Torsen T2 from SLP - $100
New Gears - $200 (max)
Bearing kit - $150 (max)

So say you have $500 in parts. Gear install should run about $400 and that should include replacing the differential, carrier bearings, and pinion bearings. Add another $70-$100 to replace the axle bearings.
Total cost should be no more than $1000 and that's still a rip-off.

My advice is to find a used 10-bolt on the boards here. You can get it shipped to your mechanic. Rear-end $150, shipping $150, install $300 - way better than the $1400 they want for it and you know the gears will be quiet.

I wanted to jsut buy all the parts and have the shop install them. I called them today and they said they would not do thid for warranty reasons. Sounds like crap to me, maybe il see if I can find anthor place.
