Racer's Lounge - SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT!!! (MD, southern PA drivers take a lesson)

All I can say is :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:

I have no idea what some people are thinking, driving in the left lane, passing "SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT" signs, with barely anyone in the right lane, and with cars following them closely behind wanting to get by, making travel dangerous for all others on the road because of the increased congestion. You would think at some point they would have the common sense, and the common courtesy for that matter, to move to the right and let people pass them. Especially here in Pennsylvania, where by law, the left lane is for passing and you are not supposed to pass on the right! I contend with these people *every day*, and it is always more than one. Always! This is in southern PA and MD. Maryland drivers seem to be the worst, although the occassional New Yorker is completely clueless.
The amazing thing is, with the kind of problems they have in Maryland with left lane squatters, you still see police officers, outside of their cars, jumping out from behind bushes with radar guns!! :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: Traffic can be completely stopped in the other lane because of congestion while they are doing this.
Sorry I had to rant! Am I the only one that gets aggrivated by this?
Here are some pics of this silllines. Sorry they are hard to make out (hard to take good pics from a moving car :judge: )
Notice how you can only see one set of lights in the distance in the right, but there are about 5 cars in the left:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c209/Hawk312/squatters/squatters3.jpg
These two bright boys are in the left lane (there are cars building behind them) with absolutely noone in the left.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c209/Hawk312/squatters/squatters2.jpg
In this one, the line is so long that you can`t tell who is holding up the pack, just that it is one slooooowwww car:

Awesome Rant. I know exactly how you feel. I cant count how many times i've had to pass on the right or get held up for miles in traffic because of one fucking person going to slow to pass the car on the right and get over. :pissed:

I agree When I had to commute an hour for school in the southern PA area people would all the time hog up the left lane and NOT pass people just cruise. I am a believer in useing the left lane to PASS and get back over

I know what you mean, but it's not only PA and MD, it's unfortunately all over the country, lack of lane discipline, and general bad driving, are becoming all to common, and you wonder why the speed limit is 70, most drivers can barely handle that, it's disgusting.
The police don't help, they're all trying to make their speeding ticket quota for the month, so they can show they're being "effective". I've just said fuck it, and pass in whatever lane is open

So I am not the only who has noticed it here. I live just south of the PA/MD border, and have to deal with I-83 every day I go to work. IT FUCKING DRIVES ME NUTS - IT IS THE WORST HERE I HAVE SEEN ANYWHERE.

So yes - I have to agree with this post. And I have lived in a lot of places. It is mind blowing to me - there is no concept whatsoever of left lane yielding. I have flashed lights, tapped horn, etc. One day I had an emergency (with flashers on everything - dog had found a box of rat poison and needed to get to the vet to get it out of his system). And I got behind a left lane squatter. Did not move over when I blared on the horn, flashed lights, or anything. Finally got sick of this and passed on the shoulder as I had a legit emergency. I wanted to kill the asshole who blocked the lane (dog ended up OK by the way - lucky!).

Ahhh, another I-83 commuter! :drive: Look close, you might be in the pics. :D That highway is the worst! Tonight, I get behind this SUV, noone else around. He is in the left lane. He sees traffic is coming up behind him. He slows down to 5 mph *below* the speed limit while some other wingnut rides just to the right and slightly behind him so noone could get past. People are driving on the shoulder, I flash my lights quicky, and he drives even slower, passing 2 of those "SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT" signs. Eventually I am clear to pass (2 or 3 miles later) and he brake checks me as I am changing lanes!!!!
:bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:

Here he is! He better not be related to anyone here! He must be super :gay: :gay:

Maybe it is just me, but I am suspicous of cars fast aproaching me from behind flicking the lights at night. In the back of my mind I think its a cop and slow down. But then again that is 2 lane country roads. So is I-83 4 6 3 lanes?

Hawk312
02-08-2006, 11:32 PM
I-83 is two lanes in each direction, and is a divided highway. Most people also move to the right lane if they think it`s a cop (they`ll get out of a cops way, but dont mind getting in other`s way). I never flash my lights until it is clear that the person is "squatting" the left lane, or if they are traveling at a very dangerous (slow) speed.

Its one thing when there's rush hour traffic so it does not matter what lane your in.... But once traffic clears and nobody is in front of you in the left lane, stop pacing the car next to you and get the fuck over.

People are usually pretty good about this in Michigan... usually. Probably one thing that helps is that there are no two-lane freeways in and around the Detroit area... the narrowest freeways are 3 lanes which gives you extra room. In the rural areas as you drive around the state, the "slower traffic keep right" works pretty well. The biggest problem for me is the truck speed limit... the speed limit for cars is 70... the speed limit for trucks is 55. God help you if you are behind a truck who wants to pass three other trucks. Since the speed limit is 55, the truck that's making the pass doesn't want to go too fast... he'll go about 57-58 which makes the pass take forever... :bang:

Last night there was an instance that drove me nuts too... I was on a cloverleaf onramp behind a Ford Contour and Jeep Liberty. The Ford was clearly being overly cautious around the turn. It came time to merge in with a two-lane onramp - 100 yards past the merge, the third lane ended. So, we all merge in to the middle lane, knowing the third lane is ending. Due to the lackluster pace the Ford was going around the onramp, it was nowhere near the 70 mph speed limit. I put my blinker on, moved to the left to make a pass. What does this absolutely OBLIVIOUS bitch in the Ford do???? She moves to the left lane. :bang: WTF?????? I'm now doing about 70 and she's doing 50... and she moves to the left lane in front of me causing me to brake aggressively to slow back down. There was no car in the right lane in front of her - there was no one in front of her. What a completely oblivious ass-hole move it was... It was completely baffling!!! So, I couldn't pass her on the right now, because the Jeep was there. I got right on her ass and brighted the hell out of her until the Jeep was past, then I passed her in the right lane and gave her the one-finger salute so she knew how much I appreciate her ineptitude.

I've been saying this for years. I just dont get it. I hate having to pass people in the right lane. I will say this, I always move out of the way if no ones beside me but if someone flew up on my ass and was flashing his lights he wouldn't be getting by me. If your driving normal speed and someone slowly comes up on you while your in the left lane, MOVE

The left lane squatters aren't too bad in Nashville, but all the interstate I drive is 4 lanes each way. What drives me nuts is the people who merge onto the interstate at 45mph near my house. The merge lane is about 100'(its ridiculusly short), so you have to be going the speed of traffic when you get to the bottom of the ramp. So I end up driving in the emergency lane for several hundred feet behind them because there are too many cars to let their slow ass over.

Perhaps a new Urban Legend should be initiated that Left Lane Bandits (LLBs) are being run off the road by gang initiation parties and beaten sensless and robbed of their credit cards & cell phones.

Alternatly, we might mention the LLBs are being run off the road and BuFu'd, but that would work in the S.F. CA area...

Although, no one here does under the speed limit.

God, watching the inbred redneck mother fuckers around Bristol is insane. Bristol is not that big of a town, only about 35,000 people. I get so sick of riding behind Grandma who is completely oblivious to the speed limit and surronding cars. God it pisses me off!!!

HAHAHAHA, I hate that shit too, but...if you think 83 is bad, try the Crapital Beltway from 7:30 on in the evening. It's by far worse (especially when you're on the west side trying to do 70+ to make it from Vienna, VA to northern MD). I try my best NOT to ride in the left hand lane, unless I'm above the limit, and then when I catch a break to let people that are sniffing my draft go by, I let them. It's not that hard.

i deal with this every day. i do alot of traveling for my job which includes the major highways in pa/nj/de.

what i do if somebody is riding in the left lane going slow is flash them- then give them about 5 seconds to get over. if i takes a little longer than that i flash them a few times. if they are still oblivious i honk the horn once. after about 5 more seconds i lay on the horn until they either get out of the goddam way or slow down. if they slow down i go right the fuck around them in the right lane and cut in front of them, if they speed up it is all good and if they get out of the way i wave to them.

believe me- useing your horn does wonders sometimes. you have to remember maybe the person has shit on their mind and isn't thinking about it. hell, i've done it by accident and a simple flash or horn will wake me up and i'll move but almost ALL of the time i only pass in the left lane since it is ILLEGAL in pa/nj to just cruise in the left lane. you can get a ticket for it.

In the words of a famous ex-president - "I feel your pain". And yes - I could be in the pictures - I actually don't want to look too hard. I dealt with some of it again today coming home - passed in the right lane multiple times. But was not as bad as usual for some reason in that I could even pass.

My question - is it obliviousness, intentional, or driving for Jesus (at least that is what I call it, in which people believe they are setting a bad "witness" or displeasing God if they go even 1 MPH over the speed limit)?

About a month ago I was driving on I-84 (2 lanes, both directions) and theres alot of traffic up ahead, I slowly work my way through it and find 2 semi trucks (same shipping company logo on the back of both of them) doing the exact same speed blocking both lanes! they were doing 50-fucking-mph! They must have been talking to each other or something... I swear to god if I had a gun I would have used it.

try driving in chicago. its amazing the idiots out here. left lane dumbasses at ANY time of the day. i drive 30 miles each way to work....into the city. it can be 5 in the morning, 6 in the morning, or 6 in the morning on a saturday...there is always someone poking along in the left lane (illegal in IL too). to make matters worse, the speed limit in IL (chicago areas) is 55!! so most these assholes go between 50-55.

its extremely annoying on my way home from work because ill see 2 miles of open road in front of this jagoff going the same speed as all the other lanes. if i get a chance to get around them, i will damn near run them off the road. i had a lexus almost swerve into a median one time.

you know, get a clue jeez. and then if they see you might pass them, they speed up. luckily my DD is faster than a lot of other commuter cars :). so in addition to passing by them i get to cut them offf.

lately ive been getting cut off myself...only to have the person drop a couple mph and hold me up. its like wtf. why did you have to cut me off so you could go slower than me. i run those fuckers off the road too. get a clue people.

saturday mornings theres not too many people on the road so i can cruise 80 in the fast lane. people will just randomly change to the fast lane.. when theres no one in front of them!!! so i have to jam the brakes or go around them. ugh.

DC has the worst traffic in the country. Worse than ATL, LA, or NYC. It's in the books. We are famous for our 4-lane sweeps, from the on-ramp to the passing lane in one continuous blinker motion or no blinker at all.

We are famous for 395 becoming a 5 lane highway, when people start using the shoulder to pass.

We are famous for one lane always being closed. If it looks free, it's not really, it's just closed farther down the road.

Around campus, immigrant drivers who think stop signs are just suggestions.

During rush hours, might as well walk back home.

And now, just recently, famous for people in the far left lane merging onto the new express way at the mixing bowl swiping across 3 lanes back into the middle lane.

I will say this though, during the few times of the day when there aren't that many cars on the road, people will book! Speed limit is 55, I do 65 and get passed like my car is stuck in tar pit.

Driving in DC is a combination of NASCAR, IRL, Big Mutha Truckers, Crazy Taxi, and the special Olympics all rolled into one.

NO FUCKING SHIT!!!! AIN'T THAT THE FUCKING TRUTH!!!! I have seen *cough cough* done some of those things too. I try not to be ignorant though, especially at rush hour...but some of the exits on the crapital beltway, you have to merge quick. 66 is worse though, and sometimes the parkway, ugh...i hate that road. Everytime I take it...it's fucked.

NASCAR, IRL, Big Mutha Truckers, Crazy Taxi, and the special Olympics all rolled into one. I'd also through in there Rally and World of Outlaws. You see some crazy ass shit sometimes. Crazy stuff is worse off peak hours too. Last week I saw a bimmer change langes between two cars, I do NOT for the life of me know how he squeezed it in to the hole. Well, more severe incidents tonight! I gotta remember to take my camera every day so people can see this #$@*!! It`s unbelievable.
Tonight, there were two tractor trailers in the left lane. I got behind them around the Maryland line. I followed them all the way up to center city York (about 20 miles) doing between 50-65mph. This is in mainly a 65mph zone! They would not move from the left lane!!! Traffic was atleast 15 cars long directly behind them, with an occassional person willing to take a chance and fly around them on the right. Flashing lights would not do anything!!
This was not the only incident tonight.
Any of you guys live anywhere where this is not a problem?

At the risk of sounding like a complete fool, what's the deal with passing on the right? It's technically illegal, but do you actually get stopped and fined for doing it?

At least in the Austin area you will get passed on any paved (and sometimes unpaved) strip of land, lane or not. I can't speak for the rest of Texas.

When this happens to me, these people do not know how lucky they are that I cannot legally conceal a weapon cause there would be major issues if I could.

Another thing that is semi-annoying is when you are in the left lane cruising at high rates of speed, I drive an hour to and from school so I'm a freeway warrior, and someone else comes flying up behind you going even faster. I do the right thing and get over to the right so they can pass me but what do they do? Pull in behind me and slow down with me pretty much no matter how much slower I go. I just think to myself "fuck you, I'm not being your point man."

At least in the Austin area you will get passed on any paved (and sometimes unpaved) strip of land, lane or not. I can't speak for the rest of Texas.

There's a couple problems here.

1. I'd say at least half the time I change lanes to pass somebody on the right, they choose that moment themselves to finally get out of my way (and I always give adequate opportunity to get out of my way). Now you've got a couple cars lane dancing with neither sure what the other is going to do. Not fun, and it creates a dangerous situation.

2. The very purpose of Road rules like these is so that everyone knows what everyone else is going to do. If EVERYONE followed the damn rules, the flow of traffic in almost all situations would improve drastically, and the roads would be a whole lot safer overall.

3. Most of us getting stuck behind the left lane hogs are already speeding. That's the simple truth of it. The risk of getting stopped and fined solely for passing on the right is still present, but probably rather small. The risk of getting fined for passing on the right on top of a speeding ticket, should the situation arise, is far greater though.

4. While also likely a rare occurance, there is a definite risk that any sort of accident that happens while you're passing somebody on the right will fall upon you, whether it was truly your fault or not. Perhaps unlikely, but doing so only compounds the risk of such a scenario occurring.

5. Plain and simple, people should just get the fuck out of the way! It really is such a simple concept, and oh so easy to comply with. As far as I'm concerned, there are no innocent drivers parked in the left lane. You're either lazy, oblivious to your surrounds, an asshole, or some fascist that thinks it's your duty to impose your own ideals on everybody else.

No matter what your reasons, those actions put you on my shit list, and I give nobody on my shit list any quarter, mercy, or forgiveness. Make no mistake, I have absolutely no qualms about driving dangerously, and I'll push it as far as you want to go. The beauty of it all though, I'll enjoy every single minute of it as well. You being a general reference, not aimed at anyone but those who park their ass in the left lane. Your reasons for doing so are completely irrelevant.

What pisses me off the most is old people in the morning who get in the middle lane and drive 55 killing the flow of traffic.

My theory is the same as the rest of you in that the right lane should be the primary lane unless you're passing... There are instances though where it's ok that people go against it (mostly when there is merging traffic), people are just in general dumb about driving.

I will say the thing that most pisses me off other than people hanging in the middle lane or in your blind spots is when people don't use their damn turn signal.

It really eats at me when I see someone hit the brakes THEN put their turn signal on, that's such a dumb thing to do... the person behind you might just think you tapped the brakes then go into lala land then bam both of your nights are ruined. I like to wear out the horn when people neglect their turn signal.

How does Germany keep the slower traffic to the right on the Autobahn?

I don't know what it is but people in Europe seem to have more respect on the road. When we went to France a couple of years ago, there was a posted speed limit, but it was any man for themselves on that highway. You could pretty much go whatever speed limit you wanted without having to worry about the idiot cops pulling you over for speeding. People respected you and the road and only got in the left lane unless they were passing. It was amazing because EVERYBODY did it, it was not sporadic. It was the best time of my life driving wise, I could relax and pay attention to the road without having to scan for cops as I drive. I believe most accidents are caused by those imbeciles who are that slow poke pain in the ass in the fast lanes. Squatters in the fast lane are rampant everywhere especially here in Houston. There would be a lot less road rage too if they would just stay the hell out of the way. People are just different now-a-days and have no respect for other people and especially their cars. (Which is another rant.... How people decide to park next to your cars in parking lots, I don't know how many times I have found someone parking at an angle right by my drivers side door, I have ripped a few asses for that)

In Europe they actually train their drivers. They make them take classes and exstensive time on the road is required before you get a licesnse. If they required the same amount of training for all of us in the U.S., I would bet everything I own the deaths per mile would go down by AT LEAST 10%.

A drivers license in a European country is expensive as hell also.

Wow! 2 days, already 3 pages, and still going strong! I musta struck a nerve!

So everyone here has common sense, where are these people coming from that I see on the road every day? So many good points have been made here. I can`t believe anyone would actually believe holding traffic up by squatting the left lane can be a good or safe thing to do. I think these people just have to be totally consumed with themselves that they don`t care that they are making conditions worse and more dangerous for others.
Once again, I could share more stories from my way home tonight. It`s just unbelievable how these people think.

i have a loaner sebring today...without abs...as i found out. im cruising along in the slow lane cause everyones hogging the fast lane. this JAGOFF in a dakota just decides to go in front of me. no signal or anything. going about 10-20 mph slower than me. i hit the brakes, im skidding all over and almost hit this fucker for his ignorance. god that pisses me off. i tried to cut him off but i couldnt get in front of the fucker well enough before my exit.

like others have said, getting a license in germany is extremely difficult. they dont just hand them out to anyone with 100 bucks like here in the US. all the US cares about is money money money.

GRRRRRRRRRR I HATE SLOW MOTHER F*CKERS!!!!

I live in Texas though. It is baaaaaaaaaaaad here. I mean, I can be a patient person no doubt but most of the time its careless drivers holding everybody up. That's what my cutout is for- makes a good replacement for the middle finger.

When I was in Italy last summer, driving there works AMAZINGLY Well. The speed limit was *almost* non existant. If you were in the fast lane and somebody wants to pass you, they pull right up behind you AND YOU MOVED. If you want to pass somebody else, come within 300 feet and they are out of your way in a heartbeat.

The driving system over there works amazingly well because they all have respect for other drivers for the most part. This is also aparent in their lifestyle.

Around here it's usually the truckers in the left lane. The car speed limit is 65 and the truck limit is 55. And you can't ever get on the freeway without at least one trucker going 55 in the right lane and another going 55.00000001 mph in the left lane and taking literally 10 mins to pass him, gathering a huge trail of cars behind him.

For the guy who posted about Chicago, I agree. That place is insane to drive in. People just don't give a fuck period about any driving laws there. It's freeway anarchy 24/7.

About a year ago, Illinois came up with a way to combat the left lane cruisers. If you are caught in the left lane for more than 1/2 mile....TICKET!
I'm originally from Illinois and I hate the state cops there, especially southern Illinois. Haven't gotten any tickets but they really work the roads. And domn sure don't get caught speeding in a work zone. They will take away your birthday

IL (around chicago) is ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. its disgusting. i rather just pay an extra 100 bucks a year and get to do whatever i want instead of being worried about some ahole cop on a power trip. and btw, i have never seen this new left lane law enforced. its bullshit.

I think Big E was with him for that move.
dude, youre not kidding, dont forget the squids. hell next time i go on the beltway im half tempted to have a 10 point cage, fire suit, full face helmet and some other shit. never EVER go on 495 past 330...itll take 2 hours to go 5 friggin miles. during the ride for pride the last guy in line happened to break his car completely sideways around some dick wad who completely cut him off... all this at 90mph.. aparently he needed new seat covers. i would love nothing more than to carry an air horn with me to scare the ever loving shit out of people not paying attention, o how glorious it would be.

This is one of many reason my brother got a big ass Air Horn on his truck. And note these air horn are the same as firetruck and abulance use :hail: He said its best investment in any car/truck he ever had. Ever time he drives the truck he looks forword for people to cut him off

I agree When I had to commute an hour for school in the southern PA area people would all the time hog up the left lane and NOT pass people just cruise. I am a believer in useing the left lane to PASS and get back over

No kidding. It drives me up the wall living here in PA. Even here in Philly people are retarded. I grew up in southern nj where we'll run your asses off the road for driving to slow in the left lane.

With that said MD drivers are THE worst. To them doing 40 in a 65 while traveling in the left lane is ok provided you're talking on your cellphone and eating all at the same time. Then they give you a dirty look as if you were the asshole for passing them in the right lane

I should invest in one of them for my Civic. Imagine how that would surprise the person in front of me!

Actually, here is what I need:

Ebay air horn listing (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Air-Horn-139dB-Extra-Loud-For-Cars-Trucks-SUVs-Vans_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6755QQitemZ4611874 706QQrdZ1)

This is the Worlds Loudest 12 Volt Air Horn. Normal Big Rig Truck air horns put out 120 to 128dB loudness level. Extra Loud, 139 dB Ear Splitting Air Horns. Tired of the tiny, "tinny" sound coming from your original equipment Beep Horn? Want to make sure people hear you when you Honk at them? Then this is the horn for you.

That might just be a bit of overkill for the civic. But then again it probably would be fun.
