Default V8 vs V6

Well Im looking at some camaro's and firebirds and from previous knowledge I want to stay away from the v6 and go for the powerhouse of a v8.

Does anyone here have the v6? is it pretty fast for being a little v6? I mean, I've driven plenty of them and none seem to have that much power after about 40-50...Takes a while to go from 40-70 and such.

I drove one. It was before I'd ever drivin a v8 car btw. It felt fast to me, deffinatly quicker than anything I'd ever drivin. I know that If I would have gotten it, and never drove a v8, I'd of been happy with it. But after driving my lt1, I knew I couldn't live with a v6.

My son has one. It's the Y87 option with all the V8 upgrades - steering, suspension, 3.42 gears with the automatic, etc. - without the V8. And I've driven a V6 5-speed car. They feel "peppy", especially with the 5 speed, but not powerful by any stretch of the imagination. Definitely adequate for getting around town and that kind of thing. Great car for a young kid.

Looks like Im gonna have to be the representative of the V6 world. Now, take what I say w/ a grain of salt: I've never driven a V8

My particular six-shooter is quick. Not fast, quick. At the track, I've cut 60' times on street tires that normally belong to an average V8. The 3.8L will give you seperation from general traffic and clutter on surface streets. I can beat any base model mustang, and any V8 mustang up to 1997. Also, you can get good gas mileage on cheap stuff.
Terms like "power" and "a while" are very subjective and differ from person to person..

You can find a decent LS1 for about the same price as a great 3.8L. Just gotta look and have patience. An a 3.8L is faster than both of those cars you've driven

Look around in local boards like this, and classified section of your newspaper. My 3.8L had about 37K miles and only one owner, bluebooked around 7000.

My best friend's cousin has a M/T 3.8L Camaro and I've rode in it. It had moderate pep. Its not "slow" at all. It has enough power to peel-out and such and enough for passing briskly, but, my V8 powered Formula slams your spine into the seat during heavy acceleration and the hood seems to "lift off" the ground a bit... your just not going to get the with the V6. The V8 is awesome, you can drive light as a feather on the throttle and you accelerate with traffic fine. You really never need to go over 1,500 rpms when driving normally in traffic, whereas the V6 you need to go to around 3,000rpms to keep up with everyone. And the V8 gets great gas mileage for a 5.7L... I get about 22-24 mpg in traffic and more on the highway. I think the V8 is a much better value. The only thing is the insurance is more for the V8.

I hate V6's. Pieces of ****, ALL of them. They belong in cars that are not Fbody's instead of killing our heritage.

This is just one man's opinion though.

I was always the same way as you were, never wanted anything but a V8. Well I'm now 20 and still don't have a V8, and that's alright with me. No doubt it has sucked because all my friends in high school had cars but I couldn't have a car on campus frosh year anyway. So I started saving more money and hopefully I'll be getting one this summer. With a few years on my license as opposed to a brand new driver insurance won't be as bad, but I am still a single white male so insurance = ownage, but I also live in NJ where the prices are insane. My personal opinion would be save up for a fcouple years and then get the v8

Well after a long discussion with my parents, they have decided to cover my insurance but I have to pay for the car that I want. Now...to find a v8 for about 5500-6000 . I would take one with a shitty *** interior and crappy paint right now.

I think a V6 f-body is a great car for a 16 year old to start with. No offense, but if you were my son, there's no way I'd put a LS1 in your hands. And yes, the insurance will be insane.

Well I've been driving for a while now...I used to race 4 bangers out at the local track (Used to be watsonville speedway) so I'm not a 'new' driver by any means.

Insurance isn't going to be bad as you think, more than likely. I am 16 and pay 98 bucks a month through state farm on my parents plan.

And you can deffinatly find a nice car in that pricerange. Even more so if you wouldn't mind a lt1..

Yeah, I wouldn't mind an lt1 as long as it was a later model one.

all I can say, I had a 2000 firebird, it has some go to it, but it cannot at ALL compare to the get up, go, and roar of the almight V8
