Are there any military pilots here? If so what do you fly?

Hey, I'll be the first to bite. I saw your post in the Mother Rucker thread about flight school. I went through in 2001 and chose the 60 Blackhawk You are correct, it does take up alot of your time but you'll be able to sneak out a couple weekends to enjoy UCLA, or Ugly Corner of Lower Alabama! We mean that in the most sincerest of terms. I take it your going warrant, either way, great career move if you ask me. I really wasn't into racing back then so I don't know of any tracks in the area. One good thing, the Florida beaches are just down the road!! Take care and if you have any questions concerning flight school I'll do my best to answer them, me or someone else I'm sure.

The CPT I work with here in Iraq is a Longbow pilot. His normal job is the Asst S3 at 1ATB at Rucker. But he's here in the sand and we're doing some other work for a little while. So if you have any Q's, I can turn around and ask him.

I fly a 2000 Formula WS6. *lol*

kidding, I'm not a military pilot, but they have saved me and my soldier's ass time and again in the desert. Hats off.

I'm a 2nd LT in the Marines. I'm going to Pensacola FL in june to start Naval flight school. I'm hoping to fly FA-18's, but since thier useless in the current war, I'm counting on not ever seeing them.

I think it would be cool to fly the new V22 osprey if I can't get the mighty hornet.

One thing my CPT did say if going to Rucker, run, run and run some more. They love to run there. If you're going to WOCS, hahahaha, be prepared to have some "FUN"...(scarcasm).

Not true, the F/A-18's are not useless. They are the Navy/Marine's only attack aircraft now. They can still carry guided munitions, so don't count them out.

I'm AFROTC, hoping to go to UPT and hoping to strap on (in order):
T-6A Texan II
T-38

Hawks is a great choice if you ask me, maybe I'm a little biased but here is a little food for thought. With Hawks you can get stationed anywhere, and when I say anywhere I mean anywhere. For instance, where I'm at now you won't see any other military aircraft flying 100ft. above the Potomac River downtown D.C. with a birds eye view of all the monuments as well as all the museums along the Mall!

Yeah, I love the Hornet more than anything, but the latest gouge from P'cola is that the Hornet pipeline is all but closed. I'm trying to brace myself for the blow.

I've flown military for a while.

Started as UH-1 crewchief in highschool with IA Army Guard
Went to Army Pilot training in '87 (damn I'm old)
Flew UH-1's in IA Army Guard while going to college and got degree
Put in app to OTS with Air Force (I was a WO while in Army)
Went to AF pilot training '92-'93 at Sheppard AFB, TX
Since then flown:
C-21's (military version of Lear 35)
C-141's
C-17's
Now off of active duty but still flying C-17's with AF Reserve
It's been a fun and rewarding career. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Definitly go to the Peoria ANG. It's a pretty sweet gig, my buddy is going for a Nav slot there, seems like a decent group of people. Plus Peoria isn't that bad to live in compared to some places, and you can always trip on over to U of I and party. :)

I'm not quite a military pilot. yet. I'm just about to join the Air National Gaurd. One of my good friends just got hired flying F-16's in Montgomery which is where I'll be. I'll be in Life Support. My oldest brother will be flying CD-130's back home in MN. He is currently at Laughlin AFB flying the T-6. Another friend of mine just got a job flying KC-10's out of McGwire I think. My father is retired, but was a C-140 and C-5 captin, currently flying A330's for Northwest. As for myself, I'm almost done with my instrument rating here at Auburn University. Looking to go military for sure tho.

My pops was a military pilot. 21 years USAF.

WSO ~5 years - F-4 WW

Pilot ~16 years - Started out in F-111s, then got selected as a Bandit with the F-117 program, his "cover" story was he was flying A-7s. Got back from the Gulf, and got stuck behind a desk at Langley. Then he got lucky and got back into the jockey seat of the F-15E and thats where he finished out his career.

Now he's a First Officer with Delta, flying 757s out of Atlanta.

Hey Brent, how's it going? I'm not up at McChord anymore. We left there a couple weeks ago. My activation is complete so I'm back to being a part-timer, and moved back home to Iowa. Just trying to get settled in back here. While I was up at McChord, I did get to see a lot of the guys from the old list. It was kind of cool seeing everyone again.

No offense but you're not familiar then with the C-17 with extended range tanks. Frankfurt direct McChord AFB, almost 13 hours straight without a gas stop or refueling. I love air-refueling and appreciate what you guys do, but to say we can't get somewhere without air-refueling isn't completely accurate.

The only way to be guaranteed a specific airframe is to go Air Guard and pick a unit (they have F-15s, but no F/A-22s yet). If accepted you will fly that units aircraft. Otherwise, there are no guarantees in the military.

First you will need to get a commission (unless you go army since they have Warrent Officer pilots). Next you need to get a flight billet, including passing all medical, academic and physical tests. After that, you will have to pass Primary flight training where (using AF as an example) you will select a platform, either fighter/bomber, heavies, props or helos. Following track selection you will have to pass advanced where you will select an aircraft. Assuming through all that you get fighters and F-15Cs (I haven't heard/seen anyone get Raptors out of flight school yet) you will go to Introductory Fighter Fundamentals, where you will have to learn the basics of air to air and what not for the type of mission you will perform. Finally you will go to the Replacement Training Unit, where you will train to fly the aircraft. Each step you can fail out of and through most of it the is the job of the instructors is to weed out the herd. It's a lot of work and a ton of studying. If it's what you want, good luck and study hard. Any other questions, or if you want some specifics guidance on where to start, send a shout out. Hope this was helpful.

PS. You can always talk to an officer recruiter.

No guarantee. The Marines have a guaranteed aviation slot, but you can be flying anything from a Ch-47 to a F/A-18. All depends on how you do during UPT (or whatever they call it) and what the Marines need.

But USAF wise, your just gonna have to go into ROTC and work your ass off. Get selected for UPT and then score in the top 5 or so of your class and then you might get an Eagle or Raptor (Raptor depends on if they open it up to pilots right out of UPT).

98LS-WON
05-31-2006, 09:52 PM
Like SAJIN said, but you don't get to select an aircraft. You fill out a dreamsheet,(list your preferences in order) The top guy get his pick, the 2nd guy gets his pick if its still availabe, and so on. So the better you do in UPT, the more likely that you'll get what you want. But there are no guarantees, there might not be a specific airframe slot available when your class graduates so you have to suck it up and take something else.
