How much does a Zr1 corvette motor cost? and how fast are they? i need help? and how much do they cost?

ive seen them on ebay all the way up to 10 grand. i believe the lt-5 was rated at 405 hp which would make a pretty quick car. and it doesnt have near the aftermarket parts as the lt-1/4 and lsx based motors do.

a buddy of mine had one and just a starter was $600 and it was $400 just for the dealer to change it out (we did it ourselves) he looked it to a motor to build up when we found on the guy said $12000 and it had 80000 miles on it and would run another $8000 to rebuild with some mods the zr1`s are beautifull cars and i would like to have one just because of low production of them but not worth all that unless you have a lot of money to waste

I posted on LS1LT1 about ramming one into a camaro cause a buddy of mine found a wrecked ZR1 and he was gonna get a great deal on the LT5, but it got sold before we figured out if we could shoehorn it in there. But yah they are expensive as hell and when I say them I mean EVERYTHING. But contrary to popular believe there is an aftermarket for them. Ive seen many stroker kits and FI setups.

Yeah you can get parts, but there not cheap. Good luck finding a motor because there rare, and also there not cheap. Somthing like 10,000 dollers there alot thats all I know and no one on here has done it.

I havent even see a LT5 post in a long time, search and you will find info but not alot about swapping in a LT5 in a Fbody.


Have fun blowing alot of money to be differnt, ill take that 10,000 and build a monster 408 LT1 or somthing. Not worth the money at all, pointless....

So how much will a trans am go for with the engine? im thinking of putting zr1 motor in a 95-97 trans am.....but i want to see how much i can get?

Lol Why dont you do it, and then come back and tell us about it.I think there is only 3 fbodys in the world with this. I think they were all GM cars, and one was owned by a company. I dont rember nor care to find out good luck, and have fun.

If you didnt know a LT5 Shares nothing what so ever with a LT1 or a LT4, a Lt5 is a whole different beast in its own.

Tim Allen had GM retrofit one into one of his Impalas, word is it required firewall relocation and a 6 figure budget.
The ONLY think that motor has going for it is bling, it performed well for it's day but today there are MUCH cheaper options that will deliver MUCH more power.

I was reading up on the lt5 on some vette forums the other day. The guys that mod them are running 415ci stroker lt5s making 600+rwhp NA. Sounds great but when I heard $5K for a stroker crank and $3K+ for performance cams I was out the door. You can make the same power with new big bore lsx's no problem. More than anything it's just the unique factor.

i thought the lt5 was a ltx based block but with 32v dohc heads
as I remember someone told me ...."sbc bottom with lotus top end"...
now I'm curious...someone get the facts.....lol..

That's what I allways thought. SBC bottom Lotus top built by Mercruiser. That never made sense to me. Mercruiser?

Yep thats correct, It did have an LT based block with slightly different bore and stroke. A 32 valve DOHC top end designed by Lotus and built by Mercury Marine.

It doesn't, it is a different motor.

I agree, and I know that the LT5 is a totally different engine than any other SBC. The engine had to be narrow enough to install the engine from the bottom into the chassis with the 4V heads.


There are better options for to transplant however, an LT5 is cool. If you're serious and have 10K or more to spend check out the Corvette Forum LT5s go on sale there from time to time. I would plan on having an additional 3-5K for the transplant after you purchase the engine.

the LT5 was not a LT based block... it also did not have the opti... it had the coil per cylinder.. .but that was a pain in the *** to even change plug wires... because you had to pull the upper manifold to do it... honestly, it would be way better to put your money else where.. unless you want to spend ALOT of money

Mercury Marine had special honing capabilities for the cylinder walls, IIRC. They did a lot of special precise "stuff" on their own 454, 502 and 540 inch supercharged big block marine engines from what I read years back (late 80's early 90's) in the boating mags. Even at 10-13 yrs old I remember those articles on Mercury Marine's buildup of the 540 inch 800SC. One mean engine.
