It is my car that C4 is talking about. First off I think Andy is great and have no complaints at all. He is shipping a new set first thing Monday. It is a major PIA to have 2 failures. The first one cost almost $400 to fix, because I didn't see the broken spring and took it to chevy. This time it was immediately obvious and I was familiar with the way it ran the first time with the broken spring. The cam in the car is a Comp XER 220 wit 220 duration and .581 lift @ 114. I am starting to dought the spring and cam combo. It runs great, but the attrition rate of springs so far is unacceptable. I will be changing heads in a couple of weeks. Should I go to the LS6 springs and cam for a more dependable combo? I want to drive and race my car and not have to change springs all the time. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Don

I don't know about you guys, but I keep hearing about these REV springs breaking! I know it's a PIA to have your heads machined, but go w/ the Comp 987 duals.

The REV's don't seem to hold up much better than 918's from what I've been reading! Jeeez.

It seems really bad to be breaking those with a cam that isn't really that big.....

I've used the single 1115's and they definitely aren't long-term springs. I broke 3 within 6 weeks, but I think they had ~20K miles on them. We caught the first two before they caused damage. The third one caved in ~16 hours before I was scheduled to swap springs. $3000 bill since it killed a piston, etc. This is with a Comp 218/226 527/535 cam. That's low lift compared to most.

Since I knew what they were like, I used the same springs again. I broke another one somewhere in the 15-17K range, but 1000mi from home. Thankfully I was very close to an interstate exit. Dealer put on 918's ($500) I had overnighted from Thunder. Drove 1000mi home with a ticking exhaust valve, scared as h3ll of further damage.

I have 918's on it now, but they're not the blue-striped versions. I've got about 10K on them. I guess I'm resolved to swapping springs every 9 months, for a measly 390rwhp.

Sure would be nice if the damage we're incurring started hitting their pocketbook. I don't think we'll see a change until it does. They classify it as race parts and we have no recourse. Anyone who offers a warranty on the valvetrain doesn't cover consequential damages unless you buy a longblock, they install it, etc.

I'm sure it would be pricey but nobody makes titanium valve springs for these cars?

I'd like to know the particulars on the larger diameter springs (~1.460 dia)

A) Can the machining of the spring pocket break through to the intake runner
B) What is the spring and retainer P/N's that have been successfully fitted

Im so burnt. Friend just took 99 blue hardtop vette to LACR Palmdale dragstrip last night.

my buddies wife drove the vette up, she said it made a funny noise on the way there.

Started it, seemed fine,wasnt missing.

Went out to make a pass, ran a miserable 13.6@100 mph (over a second slow).

Running horribly, limped it down to R&E racing. It was found to be a broken REV valve spring. Ive got 2000 miles on this set, and this is the 2nd one thats broke.

This is total Bullsh-it. I missed racing all today at the Corvette Challenge event because a company cant make a decent set of valvesprings.

Sorry to hear that. I just broke my first Erson spring three weeks ago. They were in for about 19K miles. I was going to put the rev springs in, but oppted for the Isky's. There is a 1000 miles on them and no problem yet. THey were expensive though. I live in the valley and go to Palmdale also. How often do you go?

Guys,

I'm not sure about the part numbers exactly, but these are the same springs that TEA puts on all of their stage II heads. I'm sure you could call up Brian and ask the specifics of the machining on the spring pockets.

I have NOT heard anyone ever say these broke on them (comp 987's.) There are people regularly running over .600 lift on these. It certainly sounds worth it compared to $3000+ to fix a damaged piston and valves.

If you've broken several already, might as well just get the best springs you can at this point.

I've got Rev 1116's as well, with a Comp 224/224 .581/.581 114LSA cam. A couple weeks after the cam swap I started hearing a ticking noise and noticed the car seemed to run a little rougher. I took off the valve covers and looked at all the springs, none looked broken. I'm wondering now if maybe I should remove each spring to look at them more closely.

I believe it is worth a strong investigation. I have been told that if you pull the rockers and try to turn the spring on the head, if it turns that the spring is broken.
