Default Bidirectional contols on EFILive?

I'm getting ready to order EFILive and I'm wondering if I should pay the extra $50 for the Bidirectional Controls? They don't seem to explain anywhere on their website what this feature does for you. TIA!

The controls are worth the $ especially if you have an A4. They allow you to control multiple things in real time such as current gear, converter lockup, IAC position, idle, fuel trim learning, open/closed loop, etc.

For us the gear/TCC lockup is invaluable on the dyno.

I don't have an A4, but sounds like it may still be useful to control a few things; I assumed you had to have LS1edit to do that. I guess I'll spring for the bidirectional as well. I assume EFILive has the "Enhanced Parameters" so there is no need for having both Autotap and EFILive on an LS1?

I did some searchs and came up with a post that said the Bidirectional Controls are capable of doing temporary changes only. So it's not really a substitute for having LS1edit . . . too bad

There is no reason to get both EFILive and Autotap unless you want to use it on other non-LS1 cars. For LS1 cars, EFILive is better. For other GM cars, Autotap is better.

The bi-directional controls are temporary only; as soon as the computer is unplugged they are gone. This is because to change something, the computer has to constantly override the PCM. As a result, you can only modify a few things at one time. This is why you can't use it at the track as you can only modify a few entries in a table at a given time, which is only usefull when on a controlled session of a dyno. They also allow you to turn on and off things such as fans etc.

I thought it was worth the extra money; but I only paid $35 extra on a GP last fall.

Thanks for clearing that up, Miner. I also have a 2002 Duramax Chevy truck, so it would be nice to support reading DTCs on it also.

If anyone is interested they are very similar to the bi-directional controls provided by the Tech2.

EFILiveV5 is "sold and marketed" for the LS1.
Technically, it contains a (GM specific) fully functional generic and enhanced OBDII scan tool so for any OBDII compliant GM vehicle it can still perform the following tasks:

- Display and clear trouble codes
- Display OBDII readiness tests
- Display O2 sensor test results
- Log all supported generic parameters
- Log any enhanced parameters that are common between the LS1 and the vehicle you are using.

EFILive does some complicated things with data logging and bi-directional controls. We have not provided support for some of those features on ALL GM vehicles. So we only claim that EFILiveV5 is certified for the LS1.

However just because we only certify that EFILiveV5 will work on the LS1 does not mean that it will not work on other GM vehicles.

I do know that some of our customers are using it successfully on other models.

P.S. EFILiveV6 (due out later this year) may provide support for more than just the LS1.

Regards
Paul

Thanks for all the info, guys! This board rocks! I just ordered EFILive Pro for windows plus Autotap for Palm V today, so I should be covered. I have an '01 Camaro SS and a '02 Duramax HD truck. If EFILive Pro works on the truck also, that will be great! If not, the Palm and Autotap should get me by; that's a compact solution for $50. I might just leave that in the truck all the time. Thanks again!

I didn't mention it before because I wasn't sure how sucessfull EFILive would work on your truck or any other vehicle. But, I've been able to successfully use it with my '99 Pontiac Grand Am's 3.4L V-6.

I've checked it on my 2002 S-10. No problems on the scan side... even some of the bi-dir controls work.

Tim,

Thanks for the advice on the TC lock. I didn't know that was a feature. Will make my dyno sessions that much better. Thanks.
