What does a throttle body do and what would you gain by modding the stock one?

it controls the amount of air that goes into the engine. your gas pedal is comnnecte3d to it by a wire, the more you press the gas pedal the more the TB opens.

Modding the stock one will usually yeild a noticible gain in both HP and TQ. It will allow more air into the engine with less of a restriction.

It's your modern-day carburetor. Port it right, and it'll flow more air, telling the PCM to shoot more gas, which makes more pahr.

I agree with all 3. A lot of people port the stock throttle body, which will give ya some gain but some step up to a larger intake manifold which requires a larger than stock throttle body. If your sticking with an LS1 or LS6 intake then I'd just port the stock throttle body, should be sufficient unless your planning on running a lot of power, in which most cases people step up to a larger intake and throttle body anyway.

It regulates the amount of air into the motor...it is similar to a carb on an older car (except that the carb injects fuel as well). A ported throttle body allows you motor to injest more air so you can make more horsepower

reminds me of when my sister asked what oil does in a motor

one thing you will probably see too is more throttle > more air > more gas > less gas mileage
