Default Guages Keep Pegging Out Why?

I have a 99' Z28 that pegs out the guages every time I start it. It has only 19,000 miles on it. It was doing this when I bought it new also. I've asked and nobody can seem to give me a valid reason. So why is it doing this? Thanks. <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" />

Could be a couple things, one weak battery. Or there also is a TSB for the gauge cluster. Are you also loosing the trip odometer informaiton? If so this matches the TSB. The problem was the eprom in the cluster would loose full power and reset the milesage along with the funny gauges going all the way up. GM replaced either the chip or the full cluster. The chip was changed out to a flash prom, so it did not need power to maintain its settings. Mine did it occasionally, but only if the car set for two weeks or so and it had to be winter time. So either way its and indication that your battery is not holding a charge or your altenator is not putting out quite enough.

Yes, my trip odometer does blank out. It kinda' pisses me off a little bit about their quality control problems, like my sunvisors that fell in my lap two weeks after I got the car. They even had the audacity to charge me $70 a piece for them. Oh yes, I also like gaps in the body panels that are big enough to slide your entire hand in.
Now that I know it's the guage cluster, what do I do?

Are you sure it's not a simple gauge self check? Many cars will peg (full sweep) all gauges to verify that they are working once ignition voltage is applied.

Could be, but its not list in the GM manuals. But it does fit the TSB exactly.

It could be your battery is on it's way out. Check to see how old it is.

This has happened to me on two separate occassions. The first time was a loose battery terminal and the second time I forgot to put the nut back on the positive terminal on the drivers side of the engine compartment.

Happened to my 99 Z28...turned out to be a bad battery. After I replaced the battery it has never happened again.

my 99 Z does the same thing and i posted about it a long time ago, it seems to do it when it sits overnight and its cold but ocassionly it does it without those conditions and it doesnt bother me except for the trip always reseting cause i use that for gas mileage stuff, anyway i have asked the dealer about it yet.

Battery is on its way out. Replace the battery and the problem will disappear.

Hi guys, this is my first post so if I screw this up please go easy on me.

I agree with Red WS6 99. I don’t think it’s a battery problem.

I had the same problem with my 99 Formula. In MN late fall just before I would store the car and early spring right when I would bring her out, the trip meter would reset (about 40 degrees F). It did it pretty much since the first day I got the car. I’m fairly sure it’s a 99 model year only problem. I looked on http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ (I think you have to pay for it now) and found this…

Sevice Bulletin 990849009 (I think this is the GM number)
NHTSA Item Number SB607568

Basically I gave my Pontiac dealership the two numbers above and they replaced the instrument panel cluster under the GM Goodwill Warranty. It took some lengthy discussions before they would eat the cost. It was a defect from the factory so nothing failed over time on the car.

Hope this helps, and good luck,

Dan
