3:42's or 3:73's???
OK I'm doing the stage one of my project which includes converter, tranny and nitrous. I'm trying to decide on the gearing. I haven't raced an auto in 4 years and it was a mid 12 car at best. So the plan will be approx...
420rwhp NA and a 100 shot eventually. For right now I'm looking at the stock setup...I'm guessing 295 with the lid and 75 shot. Really looking to "liven" the car up. Doing Bilstiens, springs and some chassis stuff want to wake the car up even in relative stock form.
So while the track is important, daily (within reason my idea of DD is much different than average person )driveability is still number one, gas mileage is a concern but not at the forefront.
So 3:42's or 3:73's??

I just ordered a 12 bolt with 3.42 for my street car. I have 3.73 in my Vette and it's a bit much on the freeway in long distance driving. With a good converter you should only loose about a tenth in the 1/4 but get much better gas mileage. Just my 2 cents.

Assuming you had 3:23 to start with, you won't notice much change with the 3:42. I did that swap and was mildly impressed with the streetability of the car. It might not really be worth the money for the swap unless you go 3:73 though. In hind sight, I almost wish I had done that instead, but then I am sure my gas budget would not have liked me very much.

I wouldn't do 3.73s on an A4, unless it was strictly a track car.
Note: I don't know Rob, maybe a little spray would do me good. What do you think about a 3 stage 225 shot. 100 - 75 - 50 ??? Just toying w/ the idea, but do you think that'll get me 10's.

If you get the right stall, you should still run good times with 3.42s Bobby. My stall was setup to be tight, and I wanted to be at 6k going thru the lights so I went with 4.10s (+ they came with the rear end). The mileage dropped to around 18mpg - I was getting 22 with the 3.23s.
I dropped 3/10ths with the gears, and another 4/10ths with the stall, so if you got something like a Yank SS3600 (which flashes hi but is still tight for normal driving) & 3.42s I would think you'd net 5-6/10ths. But you will need to run 26" tall tires to be in the power band going thru the traps. According to my spreadsheet, you'll be at 5100 rpms @ 115mph with that setup. Shift points would be 1-2 49mph, 2-3 91mph @ 6700 rpm. (subtract 2mph for 6500 redline)

Look at you Mark good info, I have a Vig 3200 which is supposively similiar to your SS3600 but not as tight around town....so that may change just got a good deal on it even after sending it back to PI for refresh.
18mph is not a concern I just don't want to be rolling up to the gas station with with Dodge V10 trucks If I could get 20 on the highway even I'd be happy with the end result, just don't want it to be a track only car.
Thanks for all the info guys still a little undecided. I think 3:73's would be better right now but 3:42's for the long haul when every thing is said and done...
