how much fluid to drain to pull T400 dipstick tube?

how much fluid to drain to pull T400 dipstick tube? I learned from a big pool of fresh tranny fluid on the floor that you shouldn't pull a T400 dipstick tube without first draining some fluid. But how much? Call me lazy, but I don't want to drain and refill all 8 quarts this time.
I have a rear main seal to replace this weekend. I'm guessing a quart or 2 will be enough. Anyone know for sure?
