Any tips for setting knock retard with predator? Right now I am at +3.09%. Anyone configured their car with the predator? Should I go to 4% next? Should I look at my spark degree? What should I be looking for? Thanks in advance.

Hey, Slow. No Knock Retard from that. None at all. I'm working on adjusting my timing now. I have my timing up to 3.99% now, and don't have any knock retard. Drove around for a while and had girlfriend watch kr detection with predator and I reached .5% at one point, but that was it. Didn't reach any other knock retard at any point, whether my tires spun, or I floored it from a stop, with asr on/off. Didn't matter. That one time must've been false knock? I heard something about taking ur timing up until u hit kr then -2 degrees?? That'll put me basically back where I started? I'm kinda confused.

You can keep adding timing till you get knock,but you need to moniter your 02 sensors too.

Slow, monitor my 02's in what way? what should I look for? It running lean/rich? According to my A/f gauge at WOT, it is like 2 lines into the rich side. Thanks.

For some reason, every once in a while my car is saying 1 or 2 degrees of knock retard. I haven't yet heard any kind of ping, but I think it is false knock. How can I tell if the knock is false? My timing seems to be around 28 or 29 degrees at WOT. Thanks.

In my experience the first place you pick up
KR (on a fairly stock vehicle) is in deceleration
and part throttle, low RPM. This relates to the
high vacuum, lean mixture combination (high vac
makes more advance, lean mix makes faster burn).
At mid and higher throttle the power enrichment
deals with this. A little KR during deceleration
is a hint that you're nearing the advance limits
at the fuel mix you've set (if you're using the
Predator with its single, global scaling; if you
are doing cell-by-cell tuning like LS1-Edit all
bets are off but all options are open).

You've probably figured this out by now, but you
aren't tuning for KR; you're tuning to get maximum
power/torque, you do this by setting spark as far
forward as keeps improving power and fuel to
wherever you need to hit (say) 12.8:1 at WOT.
KR is what stands in the way of getting further
spark (as do the stock +10% adjustment limits on
the Predator). Given that many show up asking
how to get rid of KR, the 10% limit is probably
not unreasonable for the first veil.

KR can be suppressed by adding fuel and in most
normal cases KR is indicating leanness. However
KR also responds to the other environmentals that
affect burn time - coolant temp, inlet air temp,
peak pre-spark cylinder pressure, cylinder filling
vs residual gas fraction, etc.

The direct ***** you have on the Predator are
just spark and power enrichment. The fan
settings have an indirect effect, improving the
baseline and consistency of engine temp (with
stock settings there is potential for about 20F
of random variation in coolant temp, as the
thermostat wants 194F and the fans won't kick on
until 210F. This 20 degrees can bring in KR when
driving hard but moving slow. Further, the PCM
is going to mess with the spark and fuel based
on temperatures.

Non-software measures to push back KR are the ones
that further lower ECT (thermostat and further fan
activation temp reduction to support the 'stat
crack point), changes to airflow measurement (MAFT
or MAF calibration), desensitization of knock
sensors. The last (Teflon pipe tape, replacement
of pre-'99 sensors with later) is a recourse for
some sources or grades of false knock. The MAF
sensitivity of the system is large, especially in
open loop regimes (throttle transients, fast RPM
changes, WOT); a setup with an even or lean mix
has much trouble in rising-RPM driving, its mix
is a day late and a dollar short. If it's tuned
rich then it's simply a bit less rich during fast
climbs. Many aftermarket MAF and hand-hacked MAF
replacements / modifications are deliberately or
just happen to be leaner (lower reported airflow)
than true.
