Has anyone ever tried running a cutout capped with spacers?
For us cheap people, like me, who don't want to spend the money on an electric cutout, or don't want to put up with the potential problems of them, has anyone here ever tried just putting spacers between the cutout and the plate?
Like...lets say you add a nut before you put the plate on. Shouldn't this still give you a mean sound without being as obnoxiously loud as a cutout is...especially on a car with cam and headers like mine?
I guess I am gonna try and do that and see what happens.

I had an exhaust shop make me several different plates. You can have them make a plate and then blow a 1 1/2" hole through it, etc. I actually preferred the sound of a plate w/ 1 1/2" hole vs. open 3" cutout. You can try spacing it, but it might sound kinda of weird. Doesn't hurt to try though.

I think my cutout is too loud and raspy on the street when open and too quiet when closed. So I put a couple of washers inbetween it (alittle over a 1/8") and I love the sound. I can feel a difference in performance but it still has a nice sound but not as raspy and vilent. The washers are a cheap way to try too and it still has a mean sound.

Tried it for a while. 2 main problems:
Reduced effectiveness of cutout (based on observation of how much exhaust was exiting thru the tailpipes
And, in my opinion sounded like crap. Sounded like a big exhaust leak. It will also blow the heat/soot all over your car's underside.
I had roughly enough washers to space the cap out 1/4 inch or so.
Bottom line, check sig and you can see which way I went.

I do want to get an electric cutout, just not right now, I just want to find a temporary "fix" for the "my ears are on fire" syndrome.
I am gonna try the washer method this weekend when I have some time.
Does it matter which way you stick the bolts in....it's just much easier to insert the bolt from the rear and then tighten the nuts over the plate.

Ok, I tried it. I put the bolts that came with the cutout in from behind, then tightened them up with some nuts I bought in the front, the placed the plate over that and then used the supplied nuts to tighten the plate down.
I am very happy with the result! It sounds mean as hell at idle, and when you get on it, it has a nice sound to it without being overbearing. I have gotten tons of compliments just driving around, I absolutely love it and I saved myself 150 bucks!
