Problem with Idle after Converter install.
I have a 98 Z28 A4 that I just put a B1 cam in from MTI. I drilled out the TB hole to about two sizes under 1/4. To my amazement I have not had any idle problems. About a week later I installed my 3200 Vig converter and fired up the car. It idled fine for a few minutes until I gave it a little rev and then It started surgeing until It died. I put a few miles on the car trying to let it learn. Now It surges on cold and warm starts. Everytime I slow down to a stop the RPM will hold at about 1000 until the car comes to a complete stop where it then will drop to about 650-750 RPM. Then it will start to surge lightly from 650 to about 950 RPM.
Can anyone make any sense of this?

Mine does the same thing since the converter install. I also know of a couple other dudes this is happening to. If it's getting on my nerves, I just pop it into neutral at stoplights, and it idles fine.

Re: Problem with Idle after Converter install.
Frank,
The car idled fine with the cam. This all started when I put in the converter. I drilled out the TB hole one more size up today and it idles a little better. I've got the hole drilled out to one size under 1/4. My IAC counts dip into the teens when the car warms up. How big can you drill out the TB hole without throwing a SES light?

The car just needs to learn. First, do the idle relearn.
Don't drill your TB any more. If you need a little more air, just turn the idle set screw 1/2 to 1 turn open. That will get you enough air to fix the idle for a converter.
While you can hit zero IAC and not throe a code, I would try to avoid IAC counts in single digits. There is not a lot of room for the computer to adjust.

Re: Problem with Idle after Converter install.
I noticed my car doing the same thing. 3500 Stall and the car would idle like crap and my oil pressure would drop.
Would doing the things listed above fix this problem?

My car idles erratically now after the TC install too, sometimes it even dies in reverse. Where is the idle set screw, behind the IAC?

but as ragtop said the smaller converter will effect the idle. Add a cam to that and it will make it worse. I had to add timing around idle in my car, drill the TB, and turn the TB set screw. Plus my idle is set at 975 in park and 850 in gear <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Re: Problem with Idle after Converter install.
Thanks for all the help everyone. I'm going to go out and play with the idle set screw.
I'll post my results.

Re: Problem with Idle after Converter install.
I got it worked out. The only trouble now is a little surging on start up. But after that no problems.
Thanks for all the help
