Ok, I have been having rpoblems with my VATS for a while. I am going to try the VATS bypass where I clip the wires going to the key and solder in a resistor. I checked my key and it measured .523K ohms.

So, I went to Radio Shack looking for a resistor that matched. The closest I found was 560 ohms. I'm not sure if this will work or not. So, I got on the net and did a search on resistors. Jeez... there are so many different types.

Can anyone shed a little light on the resistor issue? Oh, almost forgot, I noticed that there is a 1/4 watt and 1/2 watt. 1/4 - 1/2 watt,that is basicly how much
current it can take and heat it can dissepate
a 1/4 watt should be plenty to use for that
i know there are so many, i dont think a 560
will work try to find a resistor,or you can hook up a few in series to add up to 523

There is different quality of resistors
Those with only 3 color bands are plus/minus 10% so a 560 Ohm 10% type then could really be 5.6 Ohms more or less then 560.
Better ones have more color bands and best case would be a 1% tolerance type.
I would assume for VATS the resistor value would have to be right on to match what the VATs is expecting to see.

You should try and find a "10 turn trim pot" don't know if Radio Shack has them. This is a small variable-resistor or potenitometer that has a very fine adjustment with a little screw that goes around 10 times. Get one with a higher total resistance than what you need and adjust it down with a digital voltmeter and screwdriver until it is right on.

I ended up finding 3 resistors that added up to 520 ohms. I have heard that the resistor has to be within 5% of the ohm that the key is.

I did buy the higher quality (lower percentage) resistors and I soldered them in series last night. It measures 515-516 ohms. I'm going to try this this afternoon and I'll post what happens.

It really couldn't get worse than it is right now. It basically doesn't start every other start. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

I just wanted to thank everyone for their help. I went to Fry's and found some resistors that added up to 525 ohms. I used those and it fired right up. Thanks everyone!
