Lightbulb How quick are PT-88 guys running?

I'd be interested in knowing how quick/fast some of the guys with a PT-88 turbo are running. These things are rated at 1200 crank HP, anyone pushing the limit on them yet?

Trying to estimate where my car *might* run ET/MPH wise, and if I should just go with a bigger turbo.

408ci iron block
8.5:1 CR
AFR 225 heads
Edelbrock intake w/ elbow, 90mm t-body

Figure ~3100 lbs raceweight. Car has a powerglide with t-brake.

Also, could someone explain to me why both the GT47-88 and PT-88 are considered "88mm turbos" but the GT47 is about twice the physical size?

Thanks,

Tony

PT-88 = T4 and I think that will be your limitation. I see high backpressure in your future (if you are serious about pushing the limits of the turbo, especially with 408cid). If you are building your own kit anyway, T6 is what you need for sure...unless you do twins. I mean its a race car, right? Nut-up and put a 91mm+ on the car like 'Wormboy'.

BTW - 88mm is the size of the wheel, the case its in can vary in size (within reason). Obviously, the bigger the turbo the higher the ceiling, but there are exceptions. You have the money I think...call Jose and just have him build you one.

Ryan, its a drag car, but I want to be able to go rounds without a pit crew

I've been emailing with Precision about possibly upgrading the turbine to T6, and will probably do so. I'll be building my own kit most likely, unless I see a used set of hot side pipes for sale that are already built.

they dont have listed anymore but on precision's home page they have a mustang featured with a 347, powerglide at 3100lbs running consitant 8.90's
id stay with 370 cubes or smaller with that T4 frame.
you do have the option of putting a T6 exhaust housing with a 5" outlet on that PT88
id do that if your wanting to use a 408.
what are you wanting to run? Im gussing that turbo is good for high eights with that weight. probably 8.7-8.9's

the gt 47 has a bigger frame obviously. i think the exducer is bigger on the 47-88, but i could be wrong as ive heard precision uses their wheels from garrett, and they might have gotten that one from the 47-88. The housing on the 47-88 is also bigger with a bigger AR and a T6 flange, not sure of the exhaust wheel size in comparision though

A PT-88 will push a 3200+ car to mid 8's with the right tune and suspension. It is still 74% efficient even at a 6500rpm (~19psi) on a 408. Give Jose a call and he can explain more stuff over the phone. Bigger is NOT always better. It is an option but may not be the best choice for your motor.

John, i've heard the same thing too. I guess I would consider this setup a "starter" setup for me to see how things go. If I decide I want to go faster and spend more money on maintenance, I can always upgrade later on.

smokin, I already have a new PT88, FMIC, and wastegate sitting in my garage. Just need to order piping and a blowoff. Fuel system and BS3 are on the way.

Obviously what you have will work, but if you reach the limit and see a ton of BP, swaping to a T6 isnt exactly a 5-min job. I still say get the T6 from the start.

Definately, if you wanted to go faster than mid-8's I would look for another turbo as anything below 69% is into the choke line for the turbo. Low 8's to 7's I would go with a 91mm - 94mm turbo. Hope you get this cooking soon, I'd like to see another 8 second LS1. We're building a twin 67mm dual BB turbo '99 T/A ...it should go well down the 1320.

EDIT: added bold

Another vote for getting a t6 housing. You're gonna want more power eventually.

huh... you and i together can have a full turbo system

tony- if you have the turbo and equipment why not just hook it up and see for yourself. turbo piping isnt too expensive and installation shouldnt take too long. what do you have to lose? you can always swap out turbos later if its not pushing enough power

I say go resonable at first, like a PT88 running a resonable boost. Then once you've got familier with driving the car, jump it up to a larger wheel. You wanna get comfortable with the car before you really push it to its limits!!

Go with the T6 housing up front with that many cubes and your goals. That will allow you to switch to something larger at a later date. The the T4 flange, you are already now at the max size turbo you can go. So if it isn't fast enough you are left with re-engineering the kit. We have a customer that did go 156mph with a 6spd LT1 car. That is the most I have seen with a PT88 in an F-body.

The problem is the PT88 is as big as you can go on that flange and I dont believe you can fit a larger wheel in that turbo. Jose can correct me, but I'm pretty sure that's true.

Now, if he were to go with a large frame T6 he could interchange wheels, housings, etc. to find a good combo for the car.

EDIT: Damn, Jose beat me to it.

Yes the PT88 is the largest you can go with that frame. A larger wheel would simply choke off and just add more lag.
