Default Fast 2nd to 3rd Shift Problem...

Okay guys I just bought my 1998 Z28 w/ 39,000 miles on it. The tranny is supposed to have been rebuilt with the steel shift forks and all that good stuff. Anyways, here's the problem... when driving around town shifting, the car is great. But as soon as I get on it and I try to shift from 2nd to 3rd really fast it grinds a little, but goes into 3rd gear. Going into 3rd is the only gear it has done this to me and I was making sure the clutch was all the way down (the engagement point on the pedal is relatively high anyways) I did notice today that the clutch reservoir is a little low on fluid, but its by no means out. This isn't my problem is it? Please tell me its a hydraulic problem or just that the clutch needs to be bleed and not something mechanical going wrong. I hoping its not mechanical since it only happens when I try shifting fast. Thanks for any help guys.

This sounds like the beginning of a hydraulic problem. You might want to try and bleed the system and see what it does. I bet you have just a touch of air in your system that's all.

I have the exact same problem, but on the 1-2 shift.

Funny thing is, if I delay the shift 0.5 either by letting it get close to rev limiter or the opposite, it won't do it which further supports that theory.

I've been suspecting hydraulics as well and am not sure the previous owner did the drill mod. Since it's March break I was going to give that a shot first before I go gung ho and do some hydraulics upgrades.

i recently had a new clutch and hydro's put in and i have the exact same problem as slade. could it be just air in the lines? it did it befoe the new clutch and hydros thats why i replaces it all, and i still have the same result but like slade said if you slightly delay the shift, its all good? it is air in the lines or the syncros??

I'm experiencing this too. If the shift is delayed just a LITTLE is goes into third no problem. I was hoping hydraulics since the transmission is supposed to have been "rebuilt" already. But I think if it was hydraulics it would do it in most all of the gears. I guess the only positive is that if it is the synchros then you can still drive around easily and not **** up anything else.

So your car didn't start doing this until right after you installed your clutch/hydros?
