I have the LT4 HOT CAM (218/228, .525/.525, 112 LSA), with LT4 1.6 RR and Springs. I am happy with that. This one came in a kit with the Cam, Rockers, Springs, Locks, etc... for only $529.95. I know there are bigger cams out there, but this one was a decent price for what was in it. On the LT1, you have to take off the intake, take the heads apart so you can get the pushrods and lifters out, and pretty much everything off the front. It takes a little time....

The popularity of the HOT kit is due far more to a vicious cycle of ignorance than it being that great a kit. The cam is OK, the springs marginal for it and the rockers are limited to .0550 lift so if you step up to a real cam later you will need new rockers.

It's popularity is simply driven by so many people using it which tell more people to use it, when if people stop and do some research they can find better alternatives. Not saying nobody knowledgable uses those part, they are just the minority.

i think its popularity is from the price/hp gain then from people ignorance.
yeah there are better cams out there, but hard to beat that price.

why are the rockers are limited to 550 lift?
im running them with 600 lift.

edit
ok looked it up on gm performance parts, says there good till 575... not sure why though.

GM speced a shorter slot than the Crane Golds came with this is what limits safe lift.

Whenever someone asks a cam question someone dives in recommending the HOT cam every time you see an article about the LT1 you see HOT cam. Price plays a part but the gross overexposure it gets is the bigger culprit. Hell one of the car mags did a big blower build and even though they weren't using it they have to talk it up.
Withing the last week you had a thread on the Edelbrock parts and some guy saying how happy he was never mind he was making less flywheel than AI, LE or a host of others could have given him at the wheels, that is the ignorance I speak of. People get a power gain and think it is wonderful never mind they could have gotten much more.

what would be a good, reliable set up for stock heads on a daily driver? not looking for huge horsepower here, maybe around 320-350rwhp and tq. I was leaning towards the hot cam but i have done some searching and found several people who say pretty much the same thing as you. any part numbers you have or any info would be very helpful as well. thanks.

It needs to idle pretty close to stock as well. the car is under warranty so it needs to remain as close to stock appearance as possible.

BTW the car is a 1997 z28 M6 w/ 70K miles.

I just mentioned it to throw it in. I know there are other Cams out there... I got a Cam for the sound, not necessarily the perfromance. I wanted a nice choppy idle and lope, and the Hot Cam kit I got was at a decent price. Most of the people around here have little 4 bangers, some V6's, very few V8's. There is not much competition with my setup, as basic as it is.

The Crane 210/224 sometimes called the Crane 227 because that is how the PN ends would be mild in the idle department and everyone I know who has tried it liked it. Most f-body guys will tell you it is too small to bother with but it actually does perform well. It is popular with the b-body guys.
