Small Block & Big Block Chevy Specific - lift on stock valve springs

I have a 400 that I want to put a cam in, but I don't want to change the springs because I don't want to spend the extra cash. My question is how much lift can i run with stock heads and stock valve springs. Thanks

I ran a comp 292H with .501" lift on stock springs for three years, and I imagine it would still be holding up today, but I ended up putting a set of heads on it.
