Default Hit revlimiter??

I wasn't sure where to post this question, hope this is the right place. It was alittle slick out and I decided to open her up; it hit the limiter a few times and i let off. What is this due too, it's never done that before. I know its there so I wont blow up the motor, but why hasn't it done it any of the other times I've put her to the floor. When I get it tuned, should I get the shift points lowered as well.

If the road was slick, it will do that as RPMs climb to quick and the transmission can't shift fast enough.

I've had this happen on a couple of occasions. Cold roads = no traction! I've also hit it on the 2-3 shift when the car was cold and I had to get on it.
