Default How can I tell its an lt1?

Hey guys I will be looking at an lt1 today, its a short block and I was told hes got an intake maifold for it. The guy builds 4cyl and he does not know anything about this engine. If the water pump or the original intake is there I will already know its an lt1 but is there any way to tell by looking at the block?

Many different ways. Look for the water pump cam driven drive shaft. Also look at where the water pump bolts to the block...if it has 3 holes on each side, its an LT1...... if 2 holes...its just a sbc. Block should say 327 on the side.

casting number is 327, one peace rear main seal, if it has a camshaft cover = three holes in it for an lt1, one for any others, no cover = there is a place for the water pump drive gear to bolt up above the cam.

if he doesn't have the intake that is a distributer hole in the block because that is still how we get our oil pump driven, there is a short gear that bolts in place.

In addition to what has been said. Look behind the drivers side head 5700 is an LT1, 4300 is an L99 the archatecture is identical to an LT1 as are many of the parts it is a shorter stroke and smaller bore though and says 588 on the side where and LT1 would say 327. BOTH say 327 on the front of the motor.

In addition to the above, if the block has provisions for a fuel pump, it is not an LT1.
