Default S60 Install Photos

Well, we started work installing my buddy's Strange Dana 60. I like this rear end. They obviously put some thought in to it. If we'd have gotten started a little earlier (and skipped wiring up the Casper Fuel Pump Hotwire Kit), we might have gotten it to the point where we got the wheels on. As it is, we're not quite done yet.

This is a S60 with the optional aluminum LPW cover, with 35 spline axles and the posi. We put it on the scale, and it weighed right at 200 lbs - we were supporting it a little, so I figure it was somewhere in the 200-210 range. This is fully loaded, filled, with backing plates etc (as it came off the crate).

First pics are:

1. Old Moser 12-bolt. Soon to be sold.
2. Front shot of Dana 60 on the pallet.
3. Rear shot on pallet.
4. Close up of LPW Cover

More to come in the next post.

Do you have any shots of a 3 chanel ABS ring through the top of the housing? I am building one up and we have an issue with a stock Dana 60 tone ring.

Do you know if that cover will clear the panhard bar too?

First gotcha was... we pulled out a Moser 12 bolt. The Moser has 4 bolts that hold the torque arm bracket on. The Strange uses stock bolts. Uhhh... Stock bolts. Yeah. Where are those? After digging around in my shop for 20 minutes, I find a bag with some in there from a car I parted out a long time ago. Whew. Problem solved.

Next up, this car has a BMR torque arm. It came with 2 sets of holes drilled. The D60 needs to use the "outer" pair of holes. So we had to cut the torque arm bracket. We used a jigsaw. I told my buddy I'd cut the top half, he could cut the bottom. I hadn't checked the bottom yet. He suckered me there. Attached are pics of the cut being made (we bolted the bracket to the rear end, to hold it firmly, using the bottom bolts of the bracket). It took a while (about half an hour), but the 'ol jigsaw cut the thick BMR bracketry just fine.

Once I got it on, it seemed pretty loose. I noticed a pretty good gap between the torque arm bracket and the mount on the rear (see pic with the air gap). I found a washer in my bucket-o-bolts and slipped it in there... bettter to close that gap up (attached pic as well).

Also included a TA bracket "front" shot, shows we have a full finger's width between the yoke and the TA bracket. No problem there, even moving the bracket in.

Hey Scott, I was working on my second post there.

The ABS ring teeth did indeed look to be well off to the side of the hole. I did wonder about that, whether or not it would line up. It looked to be 1/2" or more off. Right below the sensor is a solid band of metal.

Same results here on the ABS ring, they must be using the same one I did. Have you installed the sensor yet? Looks like the sensor may need to be shimmed because the S60 ring is taller inside the housing than a 10 bolt.

Going further with the pictures, here's a picture of the ABS sensor plug. It's held in with a snap ring. Easy enough to get out, but a nice touch for those who may not run ABS. It looks like (per Scott's post above) that there *may* be an issue with sensor alignment, though we have not run the car yet. Hmm, or should I say, "uh-oh"...

But here is a picture of the panhard rod clearance with the LPW cover, and an adjustable PHR (brand unknown, I don't remember, probably BMR though). It looks to me like it will clear, but we may have to trim those bolts a little.

And finally the installed money shot... That's as far as we got.

We didn't get to the point where we could install the rear tires (28" ET Drags), so no driveshaft measurements yet. We need to center the rear for the ET Drags, and then we'll make the measurements.

Sounds like I'll be pulling that ABS sensor though... I did install it, but didn't check for depth. Thanks for the info, Scott.

What I like about this rear end - big axles, drain plug under the pumpkin, vent hole is small and unobtrusive, grease zerts on the ends of the axle tubes, and it seemed to fit pretty well.

The axle bearing option you are running is the Timken set 20 then? I like to use the sealed bearing style but I do not think Strange uses that end, only Moser does since they are a flush mount so you can reuse your stock backing plates.

Thanks for your information, very helpful since either of us can't contact anyone on a Sunday. Nice pics installed too!

I don't know about the axle bearings. Whatever Strange puts in there.

I know the Moser sealed bearings well. I cracked both of em, just replaced them. Took me a while to come up with a jig to be able to press them off the axle.

If you do talk to Strange, please post up what you find out about the ABS reluctor sensor. Thanks!

If his LPW clears maybe we should try a TA cover just to see if it will fit.

Whoa. Houston, we have a problem.

Your pictures got me curious, so I just went out to my shop and pulled the sensor. Looks like clearance is OK (the sensor is .8" deep, whatever's down there is 1.156" down).

But, I do not see those teeth at all!!!

We did not take the cover off, just planned on pulling it off the crate and installing it.

Oh boy.

I've attached some pics. I stuck my digital camera up in there and took some blind shots. I can't see that reluctor wheel at all - I guess I was seeing the "teeth" or whatever those are on back side of the posi unit!

It's a $140-ish option from Strange.

Looks like you ordered a non-ABS set up. There should be a ring in there if you orderd for 3 chanel ABS. Whoopsie!

Hey guys, I jsut got mine painted:

S60 Painted

And I also checked out the ABS situation and took pics:

Scott, looks like your ABS ring is installed backwards, or if the carrier is machined for it, then it looks like it was machined on the wrong side, or if it pressed on the wrong side (I am not sure if the machine for the ring or if it is just a press-fit)...

Mine is dead center though...

Camaroholic, yeah that really sucks if your buddy actually ordered it for 3-channel ABS... What kind of plates are those at the brake brackets??? If you look at my pics I don't have those, but mine is going in a '95...

Car is an '00 Formula, so those are LS1 brake backing plates. I remembered that you didn't have those either, but I couldn't recall my LT1 brake specifics. The LS1 has a drum brake for the e-brake, and the "big" plate holds the drum in place, while the aluminum part that bolts to the axle holds the actual caliper.

And I'll have to ask about the 3-channel ABS on his order.

95 TA, would you be willing to take your cover off and snap some pics? It looks like they weld on some steel then cut soem teeth into it from here. I bought a stock ABS ring for a DANA 60 and it has 120 teeth unlike a stock 10 bolt with 106. Looks like I need to get a hold of my water jet buddy and have some made up to press onto a posi unit.
