Default Cam Question

I was thinking about getting a mild cam for my car. I have a 94 Z28 with bolt ons. (LT headers, matching Y-pipe, CAI, LT4 KM and a tune)

If I get a mild cam, will I need to re-tune? Also, if I just got a cam and no head porting will I still see results? (As in quarter mile times and Rwhp)

The cam I was thinking about was the LPE 211/219. From what I heard it's more streetable. I'm not looking for anything crazy, this car is an everyday driver.

In all honesty, that cam isnt big enough to do very much good on stock heads. If I was going to do a cam, I'd go with a 224/230 or a 230/236. I have a 218/224 (slightly smaller than a hotcam) and its VERY streetable. I have stock gears and a m6 and it is fine. And yes, get the car tuned for the cam to get the most power and driveability out of it.

i would also go with a larger cam if you didnt have to worry about emmissions. well, even with emmissions, i would go bigger. With a new cam, i would most definitely get a new tune. You dont have to but your car wont run as good as it should and you most definitely wont see the results you would like to. I would get ahold of Bret Bauer (sp?) and see what he can do for you. I think his screen name is SStokerAce. He is a custom cam maker.

it would be a good idea to get a tune, u should really get a bigger cam then that cause its not going to make a huge diff. and your going to end up wanting more then that after u relize its not as big as u thought, i had a friend who put a cam in his TA that was about the same size as the one your looking at and beleive me your gonna want more, and u can def. go bigger and be plenty streetable.IMO

So, how big do you guys suggest for an everyday driver? What kind should I get and where can I get some for a reasonable price? (links)

if your worried about it that much, about being streetable, just stay in the teens for duration, like 218/218, 218/224, something like that and if u dont want a lope or a big one make sure it has like a 214+ LSA, and it will be plenty streetable, pretty much were ever u go its gonna be like $240ish for a cam.

If I stay in the teens for duration, how much of a Rwhp gain should I expect on the dyno? I just want to make sure it's going to be worth it.

If you are really worried about it for a daily driver a Hot Cam is a good inexpensive KIT that works.

I wouldn't want any more than about 315Rwhp. How can I get there?

If I had that kind of power and a stall, I could probably manage mid 12's. (12.6 or so)

One of the comp XFI grinds should work for you, 218/224 with a 113 LSA.

285 through an A4.

Also, if I get the cam would it be a wise decision to get anything else with it. (I don't want to break anything else by getting a cam. Or wear anything out...)

How much Rwhp should that give me? Also, where can I get that? Is there a place online, or can I go to a local speed shop or something?

Are you sure I shouldn't invest in anything else except a cam, or does the "hotcam" come with a kit with everything I need?

I've just heard that you need to buy other things when you get a cam.

I recommend you go with the cam I linked you to above. If you do so you should get 1.6 roller rockers, some upgraded springs, and some hardened pushrods. If you are set on the hotcam it comes in a great kit that has everthing you need except some new pushrods.

I already had to get some new pushrods when my timing chain broke. It wasn't a big upgrade, but there new. I should have gotten really good ones. Are they highly recommended?

What is the difference between the link you gave me and the hotcam? If I get the one you said, I'll have to buy 1.6 roller rockers and some upgraded springs as well. The hotcam is more of an agressive cam, right? I just want somewhere around 315Rwhp or so. Although, I do want something reliable. Do you still think the link above is better, or the hotcam? What is the difference?

Thanks for the help by the way.

In all honesty, I think with a good tune and a CAI the cam I have will get me 330whp through a 10 bolt and a 6 speed.

The hot cam is similar in size to the cam that I have (218/224 112LSA) IIRC.
