Currently I have a chevy 383 and I am wanting to put it in the car and run break it in. The problem is that I don't have a tranny for it yet. Will it be ok to run the engine without the tranny hooked up for extra support? Or is there another way to support the rear of the engine so it does not put extra stress on the engine mounts? Sorry for the random question but this is my first project car and am doing all of the work on my own.

not sure why you would want to run it minus a transmission, if you just wanted to turn it over, I would bolt a chain to some of the accessory holes and support the motor via a hoist

you can bolt it into the car and set a jack under the oil pan (with a block of wood) if all you want it too start and run the motor ...

You may also thread in a couple of long 3/8" bolts into a couple bellhousing holes. Place a broomstick across the framerails (if you have any) and let the bolts rest on the broomstick. Watch the distributor cap for contact with the firewall.
Don't get too excited about the throttle response. Some of it will go away when the transmission is installed.
