Default OBD 1 vs. OBD 2

i recently talked to the guy that did all the mods on my car (97 z-28 lt1). one of the mods was taking out the MAF and the O2's and taking out the OBD2 and replacing it with a reprogrammed OBD1. ????????? anyone know the reason(s)/benefit(s) to doing this? (obviously i would think HP would be one reason)

you're not going to gain any horsepower from switching

Most people do it because

1. it's easier to tune
2. it's easier to pass emisisions

If you don't care about either of those there's really no reason to.

Well, not so much easier I guess as just cheaper, and there are more options available for some stuff.

Editing software for an OBDII PCM costs around $400. Then you have to buy a scan tool software (which can run $250+).

For OBD1, you can get a PCM ($150 max, I paid $50 for mine), cable ($90), software ($90-$200), and scanning software (max $95, some free)... worst case scenario you save $100 - but you can swing it to where you're $300+ ahead, depending on what you do & deals you find.
