Trunk / hatch ajar switch

Trunk / hatch ajar switch already tried a few fruitless searches...
my 98 convertible Z28 has started (usually) chirping once instead of twice when i hit the remote lock. according to the manual, this means it thinks the trunk is open. i've also noticed my trunk light sometimes comes on at weird times - like 15 sec after the trunk is opened.
i assume the switch is located in the latch assembly? i can't find a plunger or anything anywhere else. is there any adjustment to this switch that might be the problem, or must i replace the whole latch, or what?
any advice/experience appreciated.
