How much are used bikes that are worth the purchase? I'm going to have my license soon (after I do the two day school in a week and a half) and I'm going to be looking. I dont want anything new. I'm thinking of something like a 2002 - 2006 sport bike, 600cc is more than enough for the obvious that I'm new to this stuff.

How much are they worth and what is fair mileage for a used bike?

I did the 2 day class at Seekonk Speedway a few years ago. It was ok but kind of cold early on March mornings. I think the bikes are 125s and 250s. A friend that lives up the street from me is selling her 2004 R1. It has about 7000 miles on it and she wants $7500. She has a "bun in the oven" so it's time to sell the bike. A little bigger than you might be looking for but something to keep in mind.

Yea I bet it's gonna be cold when I go. April 23rd and the 25th and it's in Acton. Everything else filled up to almost 2 months out really quickly. It was a little expensive but it'll teach me the little things I'd otherwise learn by falling off the bike and I get the license then and there. Maybe even get an insurance discount.

I'll keep the R1 in mind. It's a little beyond what I want to spend but who knows.

There are pages and pages of used bikes in the Want Ad, Joe....some priced very reasonably. Also, check out the Harley dealers. You would be surprised how cheap good, clean, low-mileage bikes are going for....My '06 Harley blk. Dyna Super-Glide Custom has finally arrived at the dealer. Hope to pick it up either late this wk, or early next...Even though I've had a motorcycle license since I was 17, am going to take a safety course as well, just cause they teach you some good habits for road-biking....Best wishes. BTW, The Harley Buell sport bikes are going for real low prices for '04 low mile models, and they are good bikes, although not nearly as fast as the ricers. WJ

Joe, I have a 1985 Honda Interceptor 700 for sale. It was my first bike and have had it since (1997-98). Runs well, new parts, a few dings and dents with only 18000 original miles on it. Asking $900 for it. I will have to get you pics if interested! Great beginner bike. . .

I took the beginner course in Acton a few years ago. Great course, I learned a lot. You might want to pick up some cheap rain gear at Home Depot (I did for $20 I think) in case it rains. They run the class rain or shine.

I ended up buying a 2001 Honda CBR600F4i which I love. My next runner up was a 2000 Kawasaki ZX6R, another great bike. If I was you I would go to the bike dealers and sit on a lot of bikes. If they don't feel OK sitting still they won't feel good after riding for an hour.

My bike was $8200 new and only has about 4k miles now (fair weather rider here). My guess is it's worth about $4500 now give or take. I think you can find some nice low mile bikes around from people who lose interest or don't ride a lot like me.

I also took the experienced rider course at Acton after I got my bike. That's a great course too.

Dont waste your money on a 600 unless you want to stunt.you will think its sux in like a week cause its like when you buy a car did you start with a honda cause you were new to going fast LOL i would rec. a 750 or bigger and i got a 05 with 1k miles on it for 7500 b/o Oh ya its a GSXR blue and black.

you dont think 600cc bikes are fast?? .....plenty of fast especially for some one starting out..besides...on the street you really dont get to push a 600cc bike to its full capacity...not to mention a 1000 cc bike..

I got my 6R after my built CBR900r (945ci,flatslides ect)98R1,92GSXR11 ect and thought it was the best bike out there I rode. True it doesn't have power of the big bikes but I would destroy the big bikes through the twisties

I had a ZX7R back in the day, but rode a friends R6 not that long ago, real nice bike. 600's are big enough for you Joe no bar hoppinh either... I did it once, blew out my fork seals messing around, then got off the bike as I parked it in the garage, never put the kickstand down and let it go... I think I was drunk

This is where you wanna be. Great first bike and CHEAP!! Buy this. If you drop it you will not care. 1 year or about 6-8k miles will change alot for you on the bike. I ride an 04 GSX-R 750. Its the 3rd bike Ive ridden. Started on a YZF600R. Please be safe, and BUY THAT BIKE!!

Honda & Kawa 600s are easier to ride & more forgiving if you make a mistake than a Suzuki or Yamaha. Honda is the highest quality. Low miles (like 1000 a year) is what you want and there are plenty out there. Look for little to no mods, look for evidence of the bike having gone down and stay away from it if it's been down. Look for a maintenance history, ideally some warranty left. Look for something that is cosmetically immaculate- no reason to settle for something less cause lots of people take a lot of pride in their bike. Be real careful, any of today's sportbikes will toss you if you crack the throttle without squeezing with your legs, don't try holding on with your arms if your gonna get into the throttle hard.
