Default Stock auto shifter headache, help!

Sorry if this is a repost of a similar topic, as I did a search.

The problem on my '00 Formula. The button you push in on the shifter **** to shift from park back to any other gear will not go in to disengage the lockout. Yes I've held the brake down with the car ignition on with the car running as well as key to the on position with the engine off. For some reason it seems to be stuck and not wanting to work. The button comes straight out and I see a white plunger with a spring, and thinking maybe the button is worn out (looks kinda rough in that area).

Anyone else experience this?

TIA,

Derek

It might be a problem with wear on the button and/or the plunger, but more likely it is the solenoid under the console. Take the console top off, disconnect it, and then try it.

Can you leave the solenoid unplugged?

I believe so. It's the brake interlock solenoid, so with it unplugged you don't have to apply the brake to shift out of park.

I unplugged it, and also the cable that goes to the key lock. Just so there's nothing that can keep it from going into gear.
