Default Rear end fill hole?

I notice on my t/a, there is a hole on the top with a plastic piece in it. It appears that someone tapped a hole in the diff and put the plastic thing there as a fill hole. It has a cap on it.

Can anyone tell me what this is and if it is supposed to be there or was added later? I don't remember seeing it on my camaro.

Ah I see. It looked like it would be way too much work to tap the top of the rearend rather than use the factory fill hole.
